Hi Guys,

I am planning to buy a name and the guy's giving a huge traffic number to that site. I wanna know if the traffic's real or it's some paid service traffic. How do I do that?/

Thx.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

hmm maybe ask him for some screen shots of the referrers? Maybe also check misc things like Alexa, OVT with the extension, quality of backlinks..Things like that to verify the domain isn't just some piece of garbage

I've heard that some people can manipulate the data using Photoshop so the data look more impressive than it actually is. There is a discussion about it in this forum but cannot recall the name of the thread. I was just reading it 2 days ago. I suggest to look into this matter before making any serious purchase.

I would check urltrends.com to see if it has any incoming link, archieve.org as mentioned to see if its been around a while, also search the domain with ext in Google to see if its mentioned in lots of places especially if the name does'nt look good enough to get direct type ins.

Beware its not one of those Pump & Dump Scams where they point loads of traffic to it for a brief period of time, until you buy it - then all the traffic mysteriously stops ! (sorry if I sound a bit too negative but I have seen names listed on sedo with high figures and nothing behind them to explain why)

Good luck

Just about anything can be done with Photoshop if you're familiar enough with it. I would think that those types of sellers get caught fairly quickly though, and that is definitely something that I would sue for if it was a high dollar name.

if its a website, ask the person if you can place a code at the bottom of their site for 3 or 4 days. and than look at the info, this makes sure he/she is telling the truth.

When I sold my site, I let the people do that. they used that one free service from google (I forgot the name of it)

Google analytics, and I've just started using it the past two days. It's a bit of javascript that you put in the code right before /body in the html. It's very easy to do, and all it does is track, you can't see anything at all on the site, so I don't see any reason at all why you can't do as angisson said, and make sure. If the site owner says no, you can't, well, there's your answer ;)

Maybe, maybe not. If I knew you in Namepros, I would probably trust you. But if a guy contacts me to buy my name and I don't know them, I probalby would not want anyone placing codes on my site, even if they explained it was safe. I would be to suspicious that the counter code may have more to it.

So you may have to educate a little.

It may be a hard sell to get them to do it, they will need to understand Google and spend some time reading thier tos.

My experience is never buy a domain only depends on traffic. Focus more on the domain itself.

No matter what track code you use, or kind of analytic you done, a SCAMER can always has his way to cheat you if HE IS A SCAMER

I would ask the person to register the website with google analytics and place their tracking code there.
You can then log on to google analytics and see the real amount of traffic that the site gets.

If you want to confirm that the traffic is legit then you should test it!
Let him change nameservers so that you can moniter the traffic yourself.

Always ask for a traffic test if you buy based on traffic stats.
