How much traffic do IDNs get?

I'm thinking about jumping in rashly having spent about 20mins looking for IDN domains and knowing very little about this. I have a couple of questions though.

1) Does anyone have any IDNs that currently get good traffic? Ballpark impressions? What language/extension?

2) Is .net a viable IDN extension for Japan? I've found a Japanese word I quite like that is available (in Katakana).

I may have set this Google trends enquiry up incorrectly because it looks like it's giving very poor result to the Japanese domains.

Wish I could help, I'm very fresh to IDN myself. Although if you look at recent stats, it appears the nations of the earth are continuing to discover the possibilities of Internet use - especially in Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Now why should people in other countries have to use English addresses?

Population - 3,776,181,949
Population of the world - 56.6 %
Internet usage - 529,701,704
Population Penetration - 14.0 %
Usage of the world - 37.6 %
Growth in 8 years - 363.4 %

Africa and the Middle East are also showing incredible growth:
1030.2% and 1176.8% accordingly!

Seems to me that we are only at the beginning.........

Thoughts anyone?

Like ASCII, it depends on the quality of the domain.

Not sure if you are asking about traffic relating from search engines for developed IDNs - cos I have a few developed IDNs that receive a fair amount of traffic on a daily basis.

With IDNs it's important to think about each country/language/culture individually. To give you an example, my Russian IDNs are getting alot more traffic than before. Reason: basically IDNs are becoming well known and used in Russia and Ukraine. This is not true of all non-english speaking countries, but there are definitely rumblings going on, and in some countries the rush to use IDNs may come on very fast.

Also, IE7/8, Mozilla etc browser penetration is taking it's sweet time. But, as of this year we are all seeing an increase in traffic....so browser updates are happening.

In regards to extensions....different countries prefer different extensions based on a couple of factors; how the extension is currently being used, and how the extension sounds in the language.

Also, because of it's strength and history, .com is best for just about every language, and there are some contenders like .de in Germany and .se in Sweden.

note: Also it is important to remember historically what has happened. In the past it was all ascii (pre 2000) -- continuing to today. Currently the market is flooded with ascii domains. So, if you see H5555.net
you have no idea about the site from any language perspective. It could be a Japanese, or Korean site, but it will count as a .net.

All of us IDNers are happy to be catching this wave now

Thanks for the views everyone. I'm wondering if IDN domains get much type in traffic as I don't have any interest (yet) in developing domains in languages I can't speak. I can definitely see the potential in holding on to them, but ideally this could be combined with some nice parking revenue. :)

Εƒ.net an average of 20 hits per day which isnt really all that great. Its highest unique hits per day was 110. and it really is not a good page or design.
I have had a few parked that got runs of 100 hits per day, then drop off in the next week to nothing.
Some stay steady around 1 to 20 hits per day.
Some, even some really great keywords get nothing.
I think its too early to tell traffic and what it will be based upon the users now.
As you have been told, its a speculative market still. Its investing for the future, whenever that will be.
If your gut instinct tells you to invest, then try. You might get lucky down the road. Right now you cannot buy low and sell high. Most of the market is from domainer to domainer although there are more and more exceptions.

The appearance alone of the IDN, especially if single character, can potential add much value; be a selling point.

Ie. two cool looking IDNs I have are: ε‡Έ.com and ιΊ».com

In regards to the traffic question, most of my IDNs get a handful of real visitors per day with a few getting upwards of 20 or so per day. Traffic is building, but very slowly as folks upgrade browsers / become more aware of IDN functionality.

If you are getting clicks in double figure at this time for parking that is pretty exceptional but it seems to up tick signficantly every time there is local press exposure. This has been notable for absense of late but expect a lot of news coming out in the run upto to Paris from ICANN and a great deal more from the local Nics after Paris.

The only non-Latin market that are in a position to explode in the very short-term is Russia and perhaps China. However, that should change as the non-IE6 browser should make more in roads with the up coming releases of Firefox 3 and IE8. Microsofts ability to screw up the Internet is definitely on the wane.

I've invested mostly in Vietnamese .com names, and have a few parked domains that regularly get between 100-500 visitors per month with around 50% CTR. The PPC is still rather low for Vietnamese names at the moment.

My advice is to stick with .com, unless you can grab a really prime term or you have plans to develop.

Well, I got my first IDN. I don't know if it's good or wasted, can any Russian speakers tell me if I've regged a legit word?

.Π°Π»ΠΌΠ°Π·Ρ‹.com is taken = diamonds? - about 2.5 million google results
Π°Π»ΠΌΠ°Π·Π°ΠΌΠΈ.com is free = diamond? - about 250,000 google results
Π°Π»ΠΌΠ°Π·Π°.com = diamond? - about 3 million google results (I got this, but I'm not sure if it's correct)

Above info from Google translate and playing around with the Π°Π»ΠΌΠ°Π·Π°ΠΌΠΈ result which didn't seem correct.

edit - think I made a mistake :)

Π°Π»ΠΌΠ°Π· was probably the one to get, already taken.

Note the benchmarking. It is important to compare apples with apples!

The mistake you made was the assumption that "diamond(s)" in Russian would be available to hand-reg at this stage :)

A tip: when looking for serp on a keyword, try placing quotes around your term, or +keyword
This particular term gets bout 240k results in Google, which is pretty low for decent Russian keywords:
http://www.google.ru/search?hl=en&q=+Π°Π»ΠΌΠ°Π·Π°&btnG=Google+Search&aq=-1&oq=

very, very few opportunities to make a quick buck with IDNs - parking or selling.

choose good names, then develop or hold and hope for the best. imo, IDNs have been (for the most part) a bust so far......

Absolutely right. Total bust. Well actually I sold over $40K worth last week without even advertising the names for sales, but apart from that you are spot on "So Far". But the balloon wll go up in Paris at the end of this month. It really down to whether you want to take any advantage of the two weeks in between or not!

Yep. 100% bust alright. SIGH!

I'm just wondering what kind of quality IDNs he has. Surely not 'premium'? :) I picked up a Russian IDN about three weeks ago and was surprised at the amount of traffic it has gotten. Nothing "spectacular" (I'm high maintenance when it comes to traffic), but impressive. Wish I had been aggressive in purchasing Russian IDNs... but oh well. Lots of "Wish I had..." in my book.

Back on topic... a bust! A total bust! DAMNIT.
