How much does extension matter?

I was talking with my brother age 63 this morning and mentioned I was building a dot info site. He says "What's dot info?"

This is a guy who spends a lot of time on the internet. He reads 5-10 financial blogs regularly, shops on Amazon, etc.

I have thought for some time that people who use search to find things click on the first results without paying much if any attention to the domain name. As he said "If I want to go there again, I bookmark it."

So, I would argue that if visitors are going to find your site via search or some other way that involves clicking a link, the extension is not all that important. I think non dot com prices are discounted more than they should be.

Just a point about development - that means different things to different people. Establishing PR creates a quantifiable value, but content and monetisation may not be relevant to a new owner, though position in search results should be.

If I wasn't into domains I'd be asking the same question.. Out of the thousands of searches I've done, I honestly cant remember one time I clicked on a dot info link or even saw one, and I make it a point to look at the URL's when browsing the results.

I just don't think theirs enough developed dot info's out there to make the TLD noticeable to the average internet user.

I think some are quick to dismiss domain names. Not surprising, back in 1995 people were already predicting that domain names would become much less relevant because of search engines (hint: the same people already realized that the good domains were gone and they had missed the boat).

There are plenty of alternatives when your dream domain is taken but not all will do equally well advertising-wise just for example.

It's a debate as old as the WWW.

You are now progressing into the next level internet surfer... the cynical web surfer. As people grow, they become more cynical and suspicious with internet sites. The "trust factor" starts to become a requirement.

Unfortunately, as the oldies get replaced by the youngsters, these young people need to be screwed first before learning their lessons. So the money-clicking machine keeps on churning... and churning.
