How long can you back order for?

Sorry, noob question. How long before a domain expires can you back order for? Like if the domain is set to expire in six months, can I still back order it, and will the back ordering company still try to register it for me?

Sure you can backorder a domain that is set to expire in 6 months but you should wait at leastt until it expires to place any backorders.

Oh you're right, sorry. Apparently I can't move it to that section, so... could I theoretically back order a domain 3 years before it expires? Or in other words, why wouldn't I queue up dozens if not hundreds of back orders? Or do people do that?
