Registrars -- Redemptions --- Delets & Drops HELP

Hello all,

I have a name that I have backordered with GoDaddy.

The name is a good one, IMO.

The name expired on 2-11-07 and it is still in the redemption period. I called GoDaddy and they said that the redemption periods vary between registrars.

So how long can they, legaly, hold on to a name after it has expired??

It has been 66 days since it expired, why is it still in the redemption period?

Thanks,

Yes it has.. So that means it's been in redemption for 66 days now, correct?

This is a little registrar that the rep at GoDaddy had never heard of.

How can they keep it that long without renewing it?

Domains can be held in redemption for up to a year, since the registrar has already paid for the renewal. It's essentially their domain to do whatever the like with, since the original owner has abandoned it. You could try complaining the registry, although it's a long-shot.

I didn't know that the registrar paid for a years renewal??

Who is the registry? How do I find out?

Thanks,
GG

actully, there are 40 days grace renew period, and 30 redemption period, 5 pending deletion period.

Registrar give different grace renew period, Cnobin is 35 days, then there are anthor 35 grace period.

stub post:Domains can be held in redemption for up to a year

that's untrue, registry will refund when domain get into pending deletion period.

if you believe there are no one keep any eyes to your domain, you can re-register it after drops for general registration.

I think some regitrars make there own rules..

Example..
I recently let 2 names expire and drop:

Domain A: Expired on 2-27-07, already with a new owner, according to the WhoIs.
Domain B: Expired on 2-14-07, still listed as being in the redemption period, accourding to the WhoIs.

And again.. . I'll give the names so you can see the difference in DN quality.

Domain C: EastCash.com Expired on 2-14-07, already with a new owner....
Domain D: Poker--Poker.com Expired on 2-11-07, still in the redemption period.

All names with GoDaddy.

Why are these redemption periods not consistant?

Furthermore. A few of my domain name related names that expired on 3-23-07, now show in the WhoIs that they do not expire until 3-23-08 with a Registrar Status of: clientDeleteProhibit . The WhoIs also still shows my registrant info, although GoDaddy had removed the name from my account over 2 weeks ago. WTF?

I think I may call them tomorrow and ask to redeem Domain B, if they say I can then I will ask to redeem Domain A. I'm sure they will say it's not possible, and I'll ask why one and not the other.

At eNom it's true at least, maybe elsewhere. It only goes into Pending Delete if the Registrar requests a refund.

Well I guess Godady only gives a 19 day grace period. (for the names they like)

Thats how long from the point my name expired to when they listed it for sale on TDNAM.

Then it gets 10 days worth of bidding..

So 29 days after (a good name) reg'd with GoDaddy expires it could be in somebody elses hands...

I'm not complaining because I lost good names or anything, I just don't think this seem right/ethical...

Other names that they did not like, that expired long ago, are still in a redemption period... again... WTF!

Grace Period at GoDaddy is 12 days. They sometimes add a few days grace period to the grace period :)

I'm losing a valuable domain in godaddy. It expired on the fifth of this month(current date: 30th) and they have already deleted the name from my account. Godaddy never send expire alert email to you if they think that's a valuable domain. I'll warn all domainers to avoid godaddy by all means.

GG. This could be informational for you. I just asked my GD account exec "how long after the domain is dropped by TDNAM is it before it actually drops at the registrar". His reply was "75-80 days after expiry date". So you have your answer to your original question. Every deadline after expiry seems to have this 5-day leeway. For example, their ToS says Grace Period is 12 days but in practice it can be as much as 17 days. This variation runs through every deadline, right up to the time they drop the domain. Hence the 75-80 days.
