I am very concerned at the lack of scientific investigation into developing the skill of playing with children. There is huge amounts of research on how to discipline children but very little research on how to have fun with them. There is a huge amount of research to prove the benefits of playing with children but not on how to play with them.
It is an assumed skill. I think there ample evidence that a lot of people don't know how to do it. I'm not talking about giving a list of games to play. Lots of people do that. In this modern age of small families many parents require training on how to play but don't.
When my son was recently in hospital I used my son's teddy bear to distract him from his suffering. He was laughing and recovered quickly. I am glad that I had developed that skill of being able to distract him from his suffering and believe that it helped speed up his recovery. I believe that many parents in similar situations lack the skill that I have developed and let their children suffer in their depression. It was not a skill that I developed overnight. It takes a lot of work and is useful for training my children to meet life's challenges.
It would be nice to have some professional training so that I could play with my children more effectively.
