How do you know when a name drops?

There's this particular domain I want and its "expiring" soon

Presuming the owner doesn't renew it, how can I check when it will be available for registration, and how far after the "expiry" date does a domain usually sit for before it can be opened to new buyers?

It really depends if it in redemption period or "pending delete"

You can try out: DNMeter, but you would need to know the exact date it drops - means it would have to be in pending delete for it's "status". If so, DNMeter would provide an approximate drop time for your dropping domain.

Otherwise, check out the dropping lists like at: Snapnames, Namejet & pool. To try & judge drop time of the domain. you want

The domain was set to expire sometime recently(that day is already past) but the website still loads, and the Whois has not changed.

What is going on?

i think diff registrar have diff length on redemption period, generic period, etc...
