How do you catch MELBOURNE IT names?

There's a name I want that has been registered already. It expired on the 25th of August and it's still in redemption period.

The registrar is MELBOURNE IT. I checked their site for back order option but unlike Godaddy they don't have that. They have a service where they'll let me know when it becomes available but that would mean I'll lose the original registration details / creation date.

How long is the redemption period for and does that apply to all registrars?

Can expiring names @ MELBOURNE IT be caught before they drop so to keep the original creation date?

Thanks.

Yes, they first make their expired (prerelease) domains available to Snapnames. Since the name is in redemption it's too late, it's going to drop. The only way to retain the age would be to get in touch with the owner so they redeem the domain :)

When a domain expires is it prereleased immediately after it expires?

Unfortunately you are way too late. The domain goes to pre-release auction between 18 and 22 days after expiry and stays there about three weeks.

It is now day 64 after expiry. The pre-release auction must have closed around day 42.

You have missed your chance of getting the domain during pre-release while it was auctioned exclusively on one site. This also means the domain will no longer keep it's original creation date.

Now it will drop and anybody can catch it. Add it to domain monitor or keep checking it every 3 days on my site so you don't miss the pending delete stage.

I use your monitor service.. it's great, but why must I check with your site every 3 days for pending delete status if your monitor service will send me an email when a name is about to drop?

Hi,
You don't need to. I wrote that as an alternative.

I just got a name that was previously registered to Melbourne IT. I also heard they go to Snapnames first, but I backordered at all 3 places just to be safe. I'd been stalking this name for so long, which was a real estate related name with traffic (not a premium one, for sure, but along the lines of "best california homes" that was developed and has over 300 backlinks).

It was finally caught by Pool. I was kind of surprised, but I know they have a high success rate. I placed my backorders during the Pending Delete stage (and waited until the last minute at Namejet).

It's a complete lottery when you place the backorder after about 45 days after expiry. As Erdinc says, it will drop. So any dropcatcher could catch it. It was wise of you to place your backorder at all 3 major backorderers.

Why didn't you order it during pre-release like Erdinc is always recommending?

I may have ordered it during Prerelease at Snapnames at Pool I can't recall. I waited until the last minute at Namejet because a) the name wasn't listed until it reached the Pending Delete stage (I kept checking, but it wasn't there) and b) Namejet shows how many people have backordered a name, and I didn't want to draw attention to it before the deadline.
