How do adult sites make money?

I always wondered that, where come out the $$$ for porn sites?
There are a lot of Porn on the web, and much is for free too. I haven't saw ads (ok, for what I could see) I saw there are paysites, but I don't know if people sign up there, paying fees, with a lot of the same thing to see for free.
Also fees seems to be very low, so even having thousand subscribers I don't think would be possible to cover the general maintenance costs, included servers, pc, designers, webmaster.....and then I imagine that also the material to publish should have some cost.
Can someone explain this thing?

Google or Yahoo maybe used by some people to search sex content materials, but it's main use is not for sex but searching the web for anything. Porn sites mainly is sex. Yahoo is primary use is portal (email, search). What's the number one search item on Google? Is it sex? I dont think so.

Whether Harry Potter contains sex or not, but people watch it not because it has sex in it, but what comes to mind before watching are reasons like Magic, Radcliffe etc...sex will popped up for those who are sexual oriented beings. Many people go for it because it's not R18 .

As i have said earlier, sex sells but it's NOT the top one seller on the web.

that it is not proving so much indeed.
It is the same with any other revenue system based on affiliation, Some make big money, some just some money but the big part just very little to nothing.
I think this field make no exception, it is cause of the system .IMHO

Of course I am not living on another planet, I am living here and I know, that for wich concern the webmasters, most of them get in to sex because in the hope of make some money, in this case they consider sex just as a business like any other.

But me I am used to consider things also in the general contest, when I whish to start say a business, or something else, I also take a look if the thing in wich I am going to pu t my time, my mind , my energy and my money it is in favor of a vision that I am happy to contribute to make exist or if it is against it , that would be the same as to say I am doing something against myself, that would be the most stupid way to suicide.

I am having the doubt that a consistent part of the money coming from this " industry" it is not really from subscriptions, infact by simply reading the answers here it seems clear that, at level of single webites, the situation it is not different from other affiliate systems, and as I already pointed out, some few ones they make big money and few money are left to be subdivided in too many pieces among countles websites just to make it appear that a lot of money are circulating and so that most of the person would say that everyone is making some money(but are not serious money just cents)

I am not going to make a crusade agains sex, eventually against porn, but it is not even that.
I took the example of sex because it anomalous and suspicious relevance it had took over the internet.

What I am trying to make here it is just to clear a little the situation in order to make people,not only the young ones, but anyone, to be more aware before to start something, just to make money out from it, to think if it would be better instead try to make something original.
At least at parity of effort, if you have make no money out of it you would have something to be proud of it, may be an inspiration for someone else.
