How did you get into domaining?

I'm curious to know the stories behind how others ended up in this business. Care to share?

I'll start the ball rolling. I came at this sort of through the backdoor. Unlike most people that start off with money they want to invest, I started out with a few domains that I had acquired for a business as an end user. They were all along the lines of CityService.com and ServiceCity.com and when it was time to move away from the city where I lived, I had the "brilliant" and "original" idea that my competitors might have an interest in acquiring those domains. At that point, I had never heard of domaining or even heard of anyone selling a domain. Moreover, I had no idea what I should charge for them but I figured I would give it a shot and try to get as much for them as possible. So, I sent out 40 emails and lo and behold I managed to get one sale. Several months later, I tried again and sold 3 more. That's when I realized that there was potential for a business so I reinvested the earnings from those sales and have been doing this full time for the last 3 years. The End. :)

Your turn...

I hand registered privatesocial dot com way back in 07 for a personal project. Less than a month later I sold it for $325 someone offered me. I couldn't believe it. Afterwards I found my way to Namepros. :) Was like more than 3150% ROI. :)

Read and read and read. :) I hand regged some absolute shockers when I started out, so don't feel bad if you do just keep going. (I sometimes still do reg absolute shockers, but usually after a drink or two haha). :)

In early 2014 i were researching about alternate ways to monetize a concept application that i were developing, and while doing that, i stumbled upon how domains were monetized, and when i dug deeper, i found out about domaining being operated as a well organized industry.

That is when i started researching over domains, and registered my 1st batch of domains (about 3-4 names).
This pushed me to get an idea about what value they held, and that is when resorted to Google, and located a few automated tools to measure the value of my domains, and during those days found out about Namepros, and then read & researched as much as i could.

Since then, i have had registered & acquired many names, and have made around 30 end user sales, many in the xxxx ballpark.
Recently received my 1st 5 figure offer that i turned down.
Have numerous offers in the xxx range with some being in the xxxx range.

I take domaining more as a way to learn to acquire great names to develop for my own ideas...rather than needing those to acquire from others. The credit for any/little success goes to this great community, and some awesome guys over here. :)

Nice Nit! Do you mainly park your domains and wait for a sale or do you usually contact end users?

Thanks, Rick.

I do rely on lead generation of relevant End Users, and at times i just park my names for the end users to reach out to me.
