I just hand-reged the following (exact monthly searches in parenthesis):
docs.mobi (1,500,000)
refrigerator.mobi (368,000)
saw.mobi (550,000)
scandal.mobi (1,500,000)
suits.mobi (1,200,000)

Seem interesting to me. On the other hand, somebody dropped them, so...

There used to be speculative bubbles for every new TLD until ICANN decided to flood the web with TLDs.
It is true, but at varying degrees. Some TLDs were largely ignored, while certain extensions like .asia witnessed a few notable sales but no real, sustained hype. (Domainers were reeling from .mobi...:))
Some people also lost a lot of money on .co .xxx .tel etc but .mobi was certainly the worst.

For the newcomers a quick refresher:
What happened back in 2006 is that Rick Schwartz took a gamble and bid 200K on flowers.mobi (he even outbid 1-800-Flowers). That must be what started the frenzy among domainers. Domainers interpreted that purchase as a vote of confidence in the extension, while it was mostly a gamble he could afford. At that point valuation of .mobi domainers, especially generics, shot through the roof. People were even announcing the shift from .com to .mobi because mobile (Internet) is the future.
Also, domainers thought it couldn't fail because it had the backing of industry heavyweights like Google, Nokia, Visa... Still want to invest in.xyz by the way ?

The irony is, 1-800-Flowers now own flowers.mobi. They paid a fraction of the bubble price (5K if I remember correctly):
http://www.domaininvesting.com/1-800-flowers-now-owns-flowers-mobi/

Anybody who wants to be a domainer must do research, study history, and be aware of past failures in order not to fall for the same traps...

Simply put, if you don't know what happened before you entered the market, you know nothing period.

While this story may not repeat itself again, there are still plenty of ways to lose money in the domain game. If anything, there are now even more opportunities to waste money.

Well put... I would also like to add in one more thing for the chance of success...
Dumb Luck....
Just some times without rhyme or explanation, you come across a person who just had
(for lack of a better term) "Dumb Luck" on their side.

Nothing can beat due diligence in any financial matter (whether it be property, stocks, bonds, or anything else pertaining to investments, speculation, or liquidity), It is always best to know what has happened in the past.

We all heard the saying that "history repeats itself" and even in the stock market or real estate, you often hear about cycles (7 year cycle). This is because in general, history does repeat itself.

So very sound advise from Kate, and I would urge anyone to understand what she is saying here and take heed because the cycle continues to roll and you want to be on the way up... and not on the way down.

Cheers and thank you Kate.

Hi Jasonn

music.mobi 616,000 USD

That music.mobi sale was cancelled - because Sedo crashed - because a whole batch of premium mobis were being auctioned with the same end time, and there was so much bidding and interest at that time. Threats of lawsuits followed and prices were not as high after when the sales were re-run.

So flowers.mobi remains the biggest in the bubble bunch.
