How are advertisements tracked on your site?

Pay per Click or impression or monthly ads how are they tracked?

How does one control/monitor either via a tool, control panel or whatever other means to monitor ads that you are selling on your own site?

If I sell them weekly or monthly on page, how shall I accept auto payment and when the month is about to expire, an email goes out that it is to expire to the advertiser and to yourself?
Or, after 'n' # of clicks, it expires (if ppc)
Or, impressions.

so, how can one track it on their site if they aren't one of the larger fish in the sea?
