Tools like Leapfish are hurting the industry by putting unrealistic values on every domain. Then everyone who believes in Leapfish holds onto their domains waiting for the elusive offer which matches the inflated value.

Its hard to explain to non-domainers that these values are nonsense.

And some give lower-than-realistic values & ppl who take it to heart sell their gems cheap, seeing no worth in them. I still favor appraisals but not free, uneducated ones.

Place is a joke.

what would be the owners motive for programming LeapFish to give unrealistic values?

Why? To leave uncertainty with their free appraisals & hope it would make you click on their affiliate links to order professional, paid appraisals, thus making them money.

Eheh, it would be good if those appraisals were correct. But even manual ones are tough to evaluate. Your domain is worth what the buyer is willing to pay, at that exact moment...

Here's a couple of my domains 'appraised' at Leapfish:

Pennsylvania_cc $12 :|
Carolina_cc $3,344

Not very, It appraised $43 for a name that sold for $3,000 - sedo previously appraised the same name at close to $2,000.

The problem with appraisals, paid or automated is people beleive them and think they are 100% accurate and "set in stone" - They never can be ! it is impossible - they always lack two of the most important factors.

1) How much would the seller be willing to sell at.

2) How bad does the buyer want the name and what is he willing to pay.

I'm sure we have all seen numerous names sold and thought....what the hell ? D-: how did it sell for $x,xxx ?

Restless-Legs.de selling for $9,104 is one that comes to mind (which looks like it was bought by a global group of companies embracing many cultures and diverse societies) - I guess someone obviously loved it.

After all a domain is unique :) beauty & value can both be in the eye of the beholder :cy:

price is relatively higher than the market value. sites listed in archive.org etc boosts the total value of the domain.

You can't think that that appraisal has any value. For example, if you ban alexa robot (archive.org) then your domain won't be worth anything. So I wouldn't take that too serious. It's a funny tool, but nothing more. That is why they upsell their true appraisal service.

I cannot believe people are so naive. But everybody thinks that his name is worth alot.
leapfish is very unreliable tool imho. It is created just to attract traffic to that website. this is perfectly clear. read their forums. all keywords in topics, no real messages. bull.

Some value...

If you REALLY want to make your day, use nameboy's appraisal system!

Leapfish can work in one way: do not put in the extension (beer vs. beer.com) and it will tell you the relative value of the words in your domain including length and search engine results.
