Hey all,

Has my server IP been banned from Wikipedia? I take results from wikipedia pages at www.ilookup.info for the search results page. If you run a query you will notice the new PHP errors at the top. Seems the same with Wiktionary.

Any way I can fix this? :( It's vital to the search results page...

Right now I screen scrape :-/ Does anybody know of a way programmatically to do it (maybe with RSS) where my server wouldn't be forbidden?

Thanks,
-Matt

Your IP was banned from Wikipedia because they thought you were abusing it. If you tell them that you're using it for search results, you may be unbanned. I don't know.

Just contact them.

your ip is not blocked/banned:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Ipblocklist

you may leave a notice to wiki admin:
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/Incidents&section=new&action=edit

if you suspect a block, request a delete request from one of the admins:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:List_of_administrators

it might be an accidental block on their side:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Controversial_blocks#Effects_of_being_blocked

HTH
pls. update me of the outcome. :)

I do not think this is an issue with them, i belive its in the scripting.
if you search, then refresh, the errors go away.
the errors also look like they are security related.

Thanks all :) I'll contact them ;)

if you search, then refresh, the errors go away.
That's because I store the results in a session variable for near-future searches by the same user ;)

I second this.

Are all of your sites on the same server. If not, and your IP address is really the problem, you might be able to use another server (granted that the IP address is different) as a proxy to fetch the results.

I don't know if you checked through all the pages about IP bans at Wikipedia, but there seem to be several, so might want to look through them in depth.

I know sites like answers.com use results from Wikipedia, but since they are a larger and more popular site, they might have a contract to grab results from wikipedia. I've seen other sites doing this as well, so let us know how it turns out.

All the best

Yes they're on the same server. They don't have RSS feeds for their articles - which I find very very odd; they should make some - but what I might do is try to get the info off the Printable Version pages instead of the actual wikipedia entry pages.

I'll look around to see what I can do. The guy responded and told me I could download the databases... but I don't have the resources to host 5 gb of info on my server...

I am on my cell phone so bear with me.

Why not trying to pull the content off of the answers.com website? Seems like a temporary at least to me.

I think you were banned for two reasons. One, it used to work and now it doesn't, and two, the error is 403 Forbidden when trying to connect to Wikipedia. I would try to set up some sort of proxy. That way you can change them when they get banned, or set up a few and loop through them.
