Hosting from hell - What companies to avoid?

A while back I asked for some recommendations regarding hosting companies to use. My demands for my site were quite modest, and to begin with I was very satisfied with the hosting company that I was recommended.

However, lately I experienced many problems with the service, especially whenever the renewal of the period was about to expire. I have given the company several chances to fix these reoccurring problems, but they kept messing up. I have been paying for a service, and not getting what I was promised. Now they refuse to refund my prepayment even though, they have deactivated my account.

I will soon be creating a thread about my problems. But before I do, I would like to ask the members of this site, if they have any hosting company they strongly recommend against using, and why.

Do search the forums and you will see tons of reviews on many hosts. I think rather than searching for hosts that should be avoided, it would be better to look for that hosts that will suit you. And may be after you narrow down the list read reviews about them or ask suggestions here.
Just my thought.

I've used Aplus for years with no problems. http://rackforce.com/, a no frills company is also a good source.

I do not like http://0lx.net (free hosting reseller from byethost.com)
i usually get 4 errors out of 10 clicks on my forum with them

there's nothing bad with byethost I've got hosting on them, paid one.

I do agree that one should look for hosts that have received good reviews and that suits one's needs. However, my last experience tells me that this is not enough. In most cases, most hosts provide a decend, not to say excellent service. Well worth their service fee. But in some cases there are hosts that seem to be very professional, but once you experience problems with them they treat you like a piece of crap. That is why I am interested in knowing about other peoples experience.
