Hockey name...what to do?

I am part owner of a Major Junior Hockey team name (dotcom). Their official site uses a much longer version of their name. We want to set up a site, as it is getting some traffic where it is parked now.

Our problem is: what to put on it?

Should we make an Unofficial team/fan site.
A "Where are they now" site.
A stats related site.
A Major Junior Hockey fan site.
etc
etc
etc

Are we looking at TM issues?

Is there a way of having a thriving site about the team without any TM issues?

Would appreciate any feedback on some site ideas and/or any TM issues that we may encounter, depending on the type of site we put up.

Thanks in advance,
ST

Well, how exact is the name? i.e. Anaheim Mighty Ducks or Mighty Ducks?

That could very well depend on what content should be put on there.

Let me know and I would be interested to talk with you about it

It is their last name. They use their full name. As your example shows...we have Mighty Ducks, they use Anaheim Mighty Ducks (just an example).

Ok, sounds like a fan site should go there, with optional stats and news.

Just wanted to make sure you didn't have the city and then the mascot name.

Since it is a Major Junior Team, I don't think you should have much problem with the domain name. But, I am not saying that this will arise, because they might want to take action and act like their professional counterparts.

Look at the examples of Professional teams using the mascot name as the main domain name of their website:

http://www.redsox.com
http://www.yankees.com
http://www.patriots.com
http://www.devilrays.com
http://www.celtics.com
http://www.nationals.com

Just my point.

But, in saying that, the Boston Bruins have not acquired:
http://www.bruins.com

instead they have

http://www.bostonbruins.com

So you shouldn't be too bad off.

Good luck with the site, and hope that they will not act like their professional counterparts.

Are the in the QMJHL?

I'm also starting up a sports site right now and have been very careful to avoid using any trademarked images or photos anywhere on the site. I'm not sure exactly how the laws work, but I think you should be OK as long as you don't use any images or logos without permission.

As far as content, why not do all of those things? It will take a little more time, but then you'd have a complete site for that team and any visitor searching their name will be able to find something they like.
