Should I get it? or later if this guy with the .com domain find out can he giv eme legal problems? claiming im copying his name or something? Take .net and stay calm. He can't sue you, unless the domain is a Trademark and he owns it too. But, as I understand, your domain is generic, so there are no problems using it.

My domain is something like "pro-editing" "Best-Drivers" "Top-Gaming"... and the guy dosent have nothing on the website... its all blank...so i guess he doesnt have a trademark nor copyright...(can i check if he has that?) anyways what happens if his website expires then someone else gets his website and makes a Bussines out of it with trademarks and everything... Cant I sue that guy or something Since Ive been here before him? or can he sue me cause he bought it off from someone that had it before me? Really confused and afraid something like this happens....

Thanks for Replying an taking your time!

He can't sue you. Stay calm. It's internet, and you make nothing illegal. There are a lot of similar situations when .com is taken and people develop other TLD's. I've done this too, took .org instead of .com.

There is no need to buy all extensions if you use it for a small project. Big companies with huge budget and huge projects have to take care of all extensions to prevent TM problems.

And don't listen to all people saying that your domain should be 100% unique. If you have the opportunity to take the best .net for your site, take it and develop. Better a good .net than a bad .com.

Copyright? Why do you need it?:) You need to register the rights for your information, and I think the process is similar to registering a TM. So, you need a lawyer, this means a lot of money.

If you just want to protect your text from being copied, you can do almost nothing, it's internet, open space:)
But, you could check this site and learn smth new about plagiarism.

And one more thing, google appreciates unique content. So copied content usually doesn't help the site.

Thanks for all the help, Mine is going to be small at the start... and i doubt it will get big anytime soon... But I still wouldnt like if my website would get shutdown by legal issues... (TM's , Copyrights, etc...) it would be nice if you could explain me this a little bit better...

I mean... I heard copyright was to protect your website name, style, info etc from being copied/stealed... So its always nice to have since many websites from big ones to small ones have it... How did you get your copyright? Cant you get it Free? by filling an application online? I'm from europe... P.s. I always see the "All rights reserverd" 2012-2013 on big and small websites...

Thanks

Work more and develop your site. Once it will be big enough, bring you a lot of money and have huge traffic, you can ask a lawyer from your country who works with intellectual property to register TM's and Copyrights.

Just take care not to break the laws and other person's TM and your site will be live forever.

Such copyright sentences are written on every site because they bring trust to the site. Usually they have no written documents.
In internet it's enough just to write a small copyright statement to protect your info. Just search for "copyright internet" to learn more about it.

First of all, the most important aspect of such problems is the time when the domain was registered. So, if you registered your domain first and then somebody else registers a similar domain plus a TM, he will lose the case, because you was in the business before him. To stay calm, you can register the TM yourself and that's all. For doing this you need a lawyer who works with intellectual property in your country.

PS: there is no need to leave me personal messages, I see your replies here.

You will not have problems. Register it without any concerns. There is a strategy in domaining, if the keyword is registered in many extensions, this means it's a good keyword. So, don't worry.
And one more advice, take the no-hyphen version.

I dont have a big budget though... so I gues TM is not an option for me now...

---------- Post added at 12:22 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:20 PM ----------

why should i take the no hyphen version? what are the pros?

Because it's the unwritten rule of domaining. Let me guess, you are from Germany?
