I decided what I'd like to do with expirealert.com:

I'd like to start a service, where people can come to the site, create accounts, and add domains to be monitored. They can set up certain alerts, such as:

- If the domain expires
- If the domain is about to expire
- If the domain name expire date is changed (extended)
- If the domain name is registered (if at the time it isn't registered)
- If the domain name is put up for sale (some kind of spider that checks the content of a site daily).

I'd like to make atleast $5/day off this site (not much as you can see). If I can do this with just google, then I might not charge for a service like this. Otherwise, I was thinking of allowing free personal accounts, but charge for commercial use .... or to just allow 10 free credits to any account (so that ten domains can be monitored), but then a person has to purchase credits to monitor more names. What does everyone think? If I charged for the service, it would be cheap. 10 cents/credit or something ridiculous. Like I said, I'm looking to make $5/day off this site.

Any ideas/input would be appreciated.

Regards,

Matt

Sounds like a great development.I would consider really researching the scripts available for your development,I mean dig hard because you will see alot of scripts that make claim to offering things they really don't offer. If you can't find a satisfactable script to meet your needs,I would contact programmers and have the script hand coded by them,It's much better in long run.But sounds like you have a great development in the works.Best of luck to with it.

Re:

Well, I'm actually the programmer/developer, so I can customize it to my needs.

I'd like to make the site credit based, with an account sign up referral program. During the beta period, I will offer accounts with twelve credits automatically (one credit is one domain monitoring per calendar month), so twelve credits will let you monitor one domain for a year or 2 domains for six months. If you refer a friend, and that friend signs up, you will receive 3 credits, and your friend will receive 12. This way, if you really dont want to pay for this service (the cost will be either $1/credit or 50 cents/credit, haven't decided yet), you can just keep referring people and get unlimited service.

Upon any of the things I have described at expirealert.com's main page, you will be alerted by text, email, or phone. If you choose to be alerted by phone, you will be charged 1 credit upon notification to pay for the call.

Whats everyone think of this plan?

Matt

Re: Post

Well I won't actually offer searching ability right up front. You'll have to type in a specific name to monitor, although I may offer the ability to change one character in a domain name and have it not cost anything, or something like that. Or should I make this unlimited and have it be a fixed monthly service? I'm trying to figure out what I should do .... the credit system, or a fixed monthly price?

Regards,

Matt

And also, what about the legality? If I charge for the service, I'm held responsible if the system fails to notify someone of a change (unexpected outage, etc.). I could have a lawsuit on my hands if someone was going to benefit from say, yahoo.com, and yahoo.com expired and my system failed to immediately notify them (which it shouldn't,b ut I'm just saying)....

This is why I'm semi-considering making it free and selling advertising space. Reduces my liability.

Regards,

Matt

Well that's something you need to cover in your Terms of Use and Policy. You will need something like that if you're charging money for your services. :)

Yeah, I would love to basically say "We are not responsible for failed alerts".... but then I dont think anyone would use the service, even if it is 99.9% reliable.

-Matt

Either way, what do you think is better? The credit system, or a month by month fee?

In my opnion - the month by month fee.

I could offer two plans:

$1/credit, credits never expire.
$3/month for 5 credits, expire at the end of the month...

So if you're on the $3/month plan, once you paid your 3 dollars, 5 credits would be added to your account, but those credits would be removed at the end of the month (meaning its not worth the $3/month plan unless you're monitoring atleast 5 domain names).

Or I could just charge $5 per month for unlimited domain monitoring, with unlimited alerts. The reason why I liked the credit system was because it made it easier to give rewards and give out "Free credits" for holidays, specials, etc. to attract more people.

I think I might start with the credit system, because I can always make a flat monthly fee that gave you a 1,000,000 credits, which would end up being unlimited.

Maybe some sites out there have something like this..better check it out first. If not, then you're quite certain to earn $XXXX.

Even if there are sites out there offering this he could still make some good money if the services he provide are good. And by the way.. the higher the competition the higher the quality of services provided :D

RE: good

Well, heres the thing. I'm looking to earn some money, but it needs to be on a trust basis. I don't have enough lawyer power and or backing money to give someone $1,000 if my program doesn't notify them of an expiring domain name.

This credit system is going to be good, because for $12/year, you can monitor a single domain name.... but you can split that up.

I'm trying to think of some other features too, and at the same time, I'm trying to think of ways for people to earn free credits. I'm going to create special discount codes that can be applied to any account at any time, like "FREE5". I'll post them on forums like namepros, and people who already have accounts can add it, and people who are signing up can use it, and they'll get a free 5 credits for the heck of it. Just to show that I'm really trying to provide a fun service for the community that pays for itself (so I dont LOSE money).

What does everyone think of the current website? Should I use a different layout, or does that seem pretty good?

Regards,

Matt

Would someone be willing to make a nice logo that integrates into that top right? Maybe a new background too? (the people with their hands doesn't really fit).

I dont have much $$$ right now but I'd be willing to give someone 100 free credits when the site opens, on top of the 12 that would come free with an account. If $$$ is needed I can probably afford $15 but not until I get paid on Friday....
