Ok... I'm not a domain trader, so know nothing about this. But there is a domain that appears to have expired that I want to buy. A Whois search on Network Solutions shows it expired on April 4, 2006. It says the registrant is Pending Renewal or Deletion at Network Solutions.

Now, how do I go about getting this domain? The problem is, that it is a nice old domain for a niche with directory listings, PR etc, so I'm afraid there will be many trying to get it.

No question the guy won't renew it as I can see he has let his other domains in the niche expire without renewal. Is it fair to assume that the "pending renewal" only lasts for 30 days, meaning it is over on May 4th? What happens then?

I want this thing. Can someone tell me what to do?

Thanks

I take it that backorder on snapnames for an expiring domain is really expensive? It's a name with a dmoz listing and PR of about 5 or 6. Is it unlikely that i'm going to get it if I bid a couple hundred bucks on snapnames?

I guess that the answer is ... it depends. If you really really want it...and you think it has some def value then you will be maybe bidding more than $200.

This domain sound good, chance are you have to bid against someone who also monitor. Or if you're lucky enough, you could get it at reasonable price if only a few people backorder it.

You may have very little chance if you don't backorder on snapnames or pools.

order it at snapnames to start with.
but that is no guarantee.
If an order was placed at snapnames by someone other than you *before* it expired* then snapnames would have an exclusive at the drop without the date of registration changing.
Now, from what I can see, this did not happen (with the limited info that you have given us).
Therefore, I would suggest to also place a bakcorder at pool, enom etc...
once it is out of the preferred status at snapnames, its fair game as to who will get it.
If it expired April 4, then the free period would be aproximately 30 days, then it will enter RGP.
after that, if the old owner does not redeem it, its all up to luck and cash. Mostly cash...

ok, I know this should be going on an appraisal page, but since I started the thread here, I might as well ask it here... Assume the following:

Domain: [popularproductcategory]reviews.com
Page Rank: 5
Google Inbound Links: 20
MSN Inbound Links: 1,500
Google Indexed Pages: 50
Dmoz: No
Yahoo Directory: No

Now, I'm not asking for an appraisal, but is a couple hundred bucks going to get it, or are we talking about $XXXX. I just have know idea of the market or value of expiring domains on snapnames.

Thanks

it is extremelly rare at things at SN to go for a couple of hundred bucks...
from the above limited data, I would be looking at $1K, and if the big boys are in town, possibly much more.
my guess $2K abouts (with the limited amount of info and a lot of experience).

Thanks. That's roughly what I was thinking as well. I think I understand the process now.

Just as a follow-up. With the help of this thread, I called network solutions and paid to renew the domain for the guy who owned it (without him knowing about it), then tracked down the owner of the expired domain (with a lot of work since he had moved) and told him I had renewed it for him... offered him $200 and he sold it. He was going to let it expire, so it was free money to him.

Thanks for the help in teaching me how this works.

you learned a very great lesson today.
I am unsure how much others will appreciate that....
to make a VERY LONG story short, yes, this works only at NETSOL.
Netsol has allowed since 2000 for 3rd parties to renew a name not owned.
However, the side efects are, well, let's say "questionable".
I wish you the best of luck.
I see this thread has a potential, and I will participate and help, but I would like to stay 'away' from the side effects :)
