Just a couple of questions from me! If you would be so kind to answer them?

I have so far managed to sell 1 domain which I bought for $regfee from GoDaddy and flogged it for $200 on sedo. I since bought a host of domains which are, to me, worth something to someone.

My questions are;

- Is it a good idea to completely focus on finding hidden gems, on the likes of GoDaddy, and reg'ing them?

- What should I consider before regging or buying a domain, a couple I read are; Copyright, something about hyphens?

- Who generally is the person in a end-user company to market a domain name to?

- What is the deal with the likes of .net, .org, .info etc? When are they and aren't they valuable?

- What are the pro's and con's of developing a domain before sale?

I probably have a lot more questions but I am concerned that I will be taking up everyone's time.

Many thanks :p

Wakeh!

Have you any suggestions of where to find answers to these questions? What I mean is are there any posts you would recommend?

The reason I asked here, is because in my search the answers I found lacked information which didn't make sense to me.

Any answers would be appreciated.

I will answer your questions but I will keep the answers simple since most domainers could write a book on this stuff. hehe

----------------

- Is it a good idea to completely focus on finding hidden gems, on the likes of GoDaddy, and reg'ing them?

I'm not sure what you mean by hidden gems. You mean hand-regged domains or ones that you win off auction? Hand reg domains are usually junk and the auction domains can be decent. Keep an eye on the expiring domains and the good ones will get many bids.

- What should I consider before regging or buying a domain, a couple I read are; Copyright, something about hyphens?

General rules for newbies: no hypens, no numbers, no misspellings/ugly words, keep it short, no trademark infringements.

- Who generally is the person in a end-user company to market a domain name to?

Send your inquiries to the contact under the whois data. If it's private, try finding a contact on any existing website the business has. Keep in mind that if they have whois privacy service, they probably don't want to be bothered.

- What is the deal with the likes of .net, .org, .info etc? When are they and aren't they valuable?

Reselling .com addresses are easiest since they are generally the easiest to use. Net addresses are good for tech-related domains, org addresses are generally for nonprofits/schools/etc, and infos are not really good for anything except maybe a directory listing.

- What are the pro's and con's of developing a domain before sale?

Pro: Better sale price, chance of earning revenue from the domain itself, it's easier to sell.

Cons: Web design can be tough, SEO is expensive, it takes a lot of work.

Thanks for the above answers, they have helped and been more informative than what I have found before now.

I have been wasting my time and a small amount of money then from the sounds of it. I regged a few domains that I thought were potentially of value, if not now then maybe in future. I am starting to think otherwise now but I will still try to make something from them.

Has anyone else got any suggestions or advice for the road ahead for a domaining newbie?
