I've been saying it for a few months -- .ORG is back. TheDomains recently covered 1&1's latest report saying .ORG registrations have increased 30% over the past 12 months.

That's great news for .ORG fans like myself! To me, .ORG sends a message of credibility and trust to website visitors. I'm sure you can look around you on TV and the Internet and see all the new .ORG websites, organizations, and campaigns that have been formed lately.

Sure, it's no .COM replacement, but it's a darn good alternative to sites that aren't actually selling something. :imho:

Thoughts?

Steve

I just got a generic .org recently

Is there still the promotion for free/heavily discounted .org's for registrants in "developing countries?"

If so, I wouldn't take an increase in registrations any more seriously than the increase in registrations from the free .info promotion of a few years ago.

I love .org, but we're not quite ready for a .org explosion.

I think .org is a nice extension. I think the registry should stiffen registration policies though. .org means organization. That means anyone with an .org says they can be. I think it should be only registered organizations can register .org's.

I think the restriction of .org to "registered" organizations would set a dangerous precedent. Why not advocate the restriction of .coms to "registered" businesses? If you want to hold DaytonPlumber.com, well then you better be a licensed plumber in the Dayton area. This is a very dangerous road to head down. Maybe parking and similar types of pages or directories or simple sites would be declared not a legitimate business use of .com.

I would not want some board to invoke an eminent domain type of philosophy for use of domains. We'll end up with arbitrary judgements of the highest and best use of a domain. As with anything else I would prefer to let a free public decide what sites they want to visit and to which they care to return.

There are enough rules and regulations and fees and taxes and laws and quidelines in life. Enough. Excuse me now - I have to go hum "Let Freedom Ring" and wave a flag.

Oh, and I like .org too.

People who are not organizations (wolf in sheeps clothing types), would just use this rule to edge out there competition, people with the smarts and know how would just make (pseudo) organizations to make a 'for profit' website under the guise of an organization

Ive seen a few threads on NP lately speaking well of org, I totally agree and have developed a number of org appropriate money making web sites over the past 2 years.
Its all about if the concept works for an org or if you can make it work.

All these new ccTLDs should help too as org still easily ranks above all of them so they all prop it up higher as the whole web grows.

Amen

New domain extensions that are released, just serve to build a tower for .com and .org to stand on, high above them all

interesting...

but what is the scale/value of the Y axis?

it is also neat to search '.org,.net,.com' ... but i still don't understand the scale

:-/

There is no scale it just shows a relative change in search volume.
That one year view does show a mild increase, if you look longer term it has been slowly rising for a couple of years. This is what I would expect to see as org is well established and huge so wont see the rapid growth of a brand new TLD.

I was surprised to see how fast .net is going down but still how much more popular then .org it is. I thought they were closer in popularity.

I have quietly built a .Org Portfolio of 836 names, This over the last three years. I have bought many one word generic .org names, but they have to fit the extension, or i wont buy them.

Last month i was offered 6.5K USD, for a .org, I accepted the offer, deal done, I look forward to many sales like that, in the future, The buyer was a non profit foundation.

The name, I never tell of any name i sell, and some buyers prefer non disclosure.

A .org lover, you betcha ;)
