Hi, I'm an old, having been in the naming end of the branding spectrum of the marketing world since the early '90s, coming from an academic background in linguistics. My team and I had worked with companies large and small, ranging from IBM, Microsoft, GM and Comcast to the local art museum, other not-for-profits, and any number of start-ups and mid-caps in between.

Business is a fraction of what it was not too long ago, though, marketing budgets being amongst the first to get slashed. So I'm hoping to be of interest - and possibly professional help - to some people around here or those they might know.

Also, I'm the original and current owner of a single word .com domain which is only in use as a redirect, and for which I would be glad to get an evaluation from you, the experts in this field, and want to go about doing so in the proper way - I'm a noob here, and want to learn the ropes.

Thanks and cheers,

-zuludaddy

Welcome to NamePros!

Thanks, and thanks to all for the kind welcome.

So, if I were testing the waters on what this domain might be worth, where would I start?

There is an APPRAISALS section on NamePros where you may decide to request an appraisal on your domain name.

You could also try to reasonably guestimate its' value by viewing comparable ( if any ) domain name sales on the NameBio.com site.

Try to search out the most similar name/s to yours and see what reasonably similar names have sold for and determine if your domain likely has a higher, similar or, lesser value than the names in the results.

Excellent. Thank you for the guidance, Sensei.

I have a related protocol question: is it typical to be vague about specific domains one might be pricing, or rather, does one fly the flag/get hype about the domain in question?

Hi and welcome. Just share the name and we might help you estimate the value. There are lots of experts on this board.

I don't understand the second question. It's atypical to be vague about your domain name, especially if you want to sell it or get it appraised.

Hey thank you, M'lord. Just trying to observe protocol as a noob, and not rock boats.

I've owned whatchamacallit ['king,' I've learned I should say] since '94 or so, it currently server only as a redirect, and I have no idea of the value beyond its sentimental one. If it's actually of some value, I might well be interested in selling it.

Some members occasionally " try " to get name value by being vague and as I recall, get answers about the difficulty / impossibility of fair market value appraisals without the exact name and ext.

Posting the domain name per se or PM'ing the name to an expert member for their opinion ( and am not suggesting me ) is the best way IMO to get a fair market value appraisal.

As an aside a " million years ago " I took a Linguistics class and, a Phonetics and Phonemics class.

Sorry to say, but I don't think the domain has much value. I don't think it's hopeless, but I think the number of end users for it is very small. It's possible to sell it (though I wouldn't buy it) but there's no comparison to lots of other domains available in '94.

Ok roger - this is what I hope to be learning by posting here. Thank you.

(It was a pretty good name for company that developed names for products, services and companies...)

Yeah, it's a nice fit for that. I actually like it for that purpose, as weird as it sounds. I think it's nice. But it's a very niche thing.

But just speaking from an objective point of view, I don't think the domain is valuable.

Then you know much more about linguistics than most of the planet.

I like it and it has some value. Continue to hang on to it and if one day you decide to sell it, please let me know. :xf.smile:
