Those errors happen to us all I guess (to me at last). Not a big deal.

Sounds like another instance of someone searching up a domain and it returning a false positive (something we all know GoDaddy's system is synonymous for doing) causing him to get excited for nothing. The guy worked at Google so he knew dang well the name wasn't available. This is nothing new for most domainers, or anyone who does lots of domain availability lookups for that matter.

Was this really even news worthy? lol.. I guess Business "Insider" isn't inside of much in the domain industry

You know, this news is heard also in the chinese domainers forums, they find it "牛B" and "绝对的人才" ha ha which means insanely strong, and absolutely superstar, they also suggest he should have immediately transferred out lol

Because you know, once you own the domain you get access to the webmaster controls. It's one of the options in the Domain Manager. Webmaster controls. Gives you complete control over everything.
