25 years ago today, symbolics.com was registered.
This was the first .com domain registered (a .net was registered earlier you may be surprised to discover) and is the oldest .com name still registered (and it has been continually registered since 1985).
The domain has had one change of owner when Symbolics, Inc sold the domain to domain investment company XF.com last August.

Our friends at Verisign are celebrating with a mini-site at 25yearsof.com/.

As part of the 25 Years of .com anniversary, a panel of Silicon Valley influencers will select the ".com 25"- 25 people and/or companies whose inspiring contributions were fundamental in shaping the Internet.
While the judges will select the final ".com 25", you can show your support for your favourite honorees by voting for them here.

How difficult was it then to register a .com (if one even knew about it)?

The big thing back then is that no one really cared.

The first hint that domains might be worth something doesn't enter people's minds until 1994, roughly around the time Yahoo came into being.

I don't think even then the most people cared about the internet until 1996. And even then, it's not until 1998 that it became clear the internet was going to be HUGE. Now, of course, the intenet has passed from HUGE to ubiquitous.

I am rather surprised Sir Tim Berners-Lee isn't further up the rankings, he did after all give the internet to the wide masses for free instead of charging ridiculous amounts of money for the pleasure like some I could mention....

Fairly complicated, a paper process where you had to fax in registration papers to Network Solutions at the time... and it was $70 for a minimum 2 year term.

In retrospect, wasn't that hard considering what the effort could have reaped :)

iirc, they were actually free in the beginning. A lot of the epic one word generics dropped when their owners decided to 'protest' the charging of fees to own domains by letting the most relevant and premier .com names fall back into the registry pool.

"Dear Sirs: On the matter of your charging me money to own a domain name, I am writing to express my utter disgust and indignance. To protest this most short-sighted, profiteering maneuver, I shall take this enormous bag of money and light it on fire...."

Happy B-day .com!

I wished my girlfriend had listened to me in 1995 when I tried talking her into using saved funds to purchase a computer to research doing business online.

We ended up buying a Persian cat for $500 instead and I didn't get another chance to purchase my first computer until 2003 when I was settled down enough to use it. Needless to say that relationship didn't work out. I still have my first computer though. Don't know what ever became of her and that cat. Biggest mistake of my life!

:D Interesting to see there is a ".com Gala" event hosted by Dana Carvey celebrating 25 years of .com.

Maybe someday they will need to expand on the subject matter and invest in my DomainGala.com.:tu:

My ex-girlfriend kept the cat. I made off with my sanity. :tri: :D

If I had been researching .com names for business in 1995, I'm sure I would have been ahead of the game with domain names. At least by 1998 when the .com boom really exploded.

It took me less than a month (after finally getting online) to catch on to domain brokering back in 2003. I had started researching different business ideas and had aquired my first .com domain for one of my ideas back then.

I can't turn back time but I can be thankful for getting in when I did.

And for getting to know a profession not many people have a clue about even as we proceed into 2010......25 years later. :hehe: It's an amazing hobby to say the least.
