First of all, excuse my English typing since it is not my main language.

So I have been contacted by a guy who must have used who.is to find my email (but I have private who.is so the direction is like encrypted by whoisprivacycorp.com) I have no clue about the prices going on at the moment at selling domains and I don't even have a number in my head at first (I bought this domain 4 days ago).

My domain is related to VR technology and today i received this email:

Hello!

I'm a representative of an investor from XXXX. He is interested in buying DOMAINHERE.

My client has $xxx, xxx budget for several domains. Just include your price to the subject line.

If you have more domains please let me know. I'm working with several major buyers and may offer your other domains to them.

How do you want to get paid? Escrow, Wire or Paypal?

Best Regards,

YYYYYY

I have checked the guy contacting me (or at least the one he says he is) and he has a fully linkedin, works in an important company etc.

What would you think about this? I have never ever sold any domain (started like a month ago) and I stil need some solid advice and knowledge.. In case it was not scam i would really appreciate any help from you guys at orientating me,

I am sorry if this is not the place place to post this,

Thank you very much,

overvater.

Most of us received this type of mail. Must be one of the oldest domaining scams.. He would probably agree to your asking price and then ask you to pay for a fake domain appraisal.. Don't even reply to this email.
If you would like to sell your domain, feel free to list it on NP marketplace, Sedo/Flippa/etc.

What would you think about this?

Just mark it as spam. This way (Gmail/Yahoo/Outlook/your email provider) will know this type of text is spam and other beginner domainer's will not fall for it.

The only time I send on such emails is to click the spam button

I once got this email too, when I was a bit younger I was inexperienced and didn't know it was a scam. The scammer said he knew a rich Arab Investor who had a few hundred thousand dollars to invest in domains. I actually replied to the email and told him the prices I wanted, which was something like $199.

The scammer replied to me saying that he was a Domain Broker, and was not interested in "low ball" offers because he earns a commission of 10%. So then I replied back to the scammer with a price of like $5,000 for one of my domain name.

He then said that he wanted a domain appraisal service, to ensure the Investor is getting the right price for the domain name, that it is the true value. At that moment, I realized it was a scam. No one uses domain appraisal services to get a "proper" value of a domain name. Domain names are priced according to what someone is willing to pay, and the "general pricing" of similar domain name sales, such as premium domain names.

There are lots of "tells" when scammers write something. The big one for me is the "how do you want to get paid?" line. No one talks like that before negotiations begin and its obvious the scamming bastard is trying to get potential marks/rubes excited. Also, no one acting on behalf of their client reveals their total budget or even worse, openly admits to ripping off their own client for commission by not accepting lowball offers.
