NEW YORK - A New York City man jumped to his death Wednesday afternoon from the Empire State Building in an apparent suicide, police said Thursday.

Lt. John Grimpel said Dovid Abramowitz, 21, jumped from a vacant office on the 66th floor.

Officials discovered his body on a landing on the sixth floor of the building, one of New York's key tourist destinations.

More than 30 people have committed suicide at the Empire State Building since it opened in 1931. The most recent is believed to have been in 2004, when a man jumped from the 86th-floor observation deck of the skyscraper.

It is 1,454 feet to the top of the Empire State Building's lightning rod.

Or perhaps it's just one of the easiest places to commit suicide in the area?

It's not really that easy. Only very high. Unless you have access to a private office area with no people and no security then you're not able to commit suicide.

you can commit suicide from anywhere above 6 stories... I mean even from 4 stories some people can die, others break all the bones in their body but survive (that would really suck). I guess they just wanted to be famous for once in their life... most people that jump are either extremely depressed or suicidal maniacs :)

It's not the easiest it's just the highest profile.
These people are exhibitionists who think they will gain immortality by getting their names in the paper.

Jump off of some bank and you are just road kill, but jump off of the Empire State Building and you make the news.

Actually the jump didn't kill him...it was the landing part that did him in :td:

Yea, but when it says "Jumped to his Death" they are saying that he ended his life that way when he hit the ground. ;)

It is a tragedy when someone does something like this and we should not make light of it.

One reason why we should not make light of it is that if people appear not to care about this guy, it is a fact that it can cause other depressed people to want to commit suicide.

Perhaps it is a reflection that our society is not caring enough that some people do commit suicide in this way. We should have empathy for anyone who is suffering.

I am curious as to how someone else got out from the 86th floor. The last time I was there they had a huge fence going around the entire observation deck and then 2 floors below was a huge ledge that went out several feet with another fence IIRC. Not saying it is impossible but damn difficult.

If you really want a cool feeling though go all the way up to the 102 floor (I believe it was 102) where you are at the very base of the antenna. It is a tiny room that fits only several people and you can feel the wind moving the room. Very freaky while being really cool. Of course as a reformed adrenaline junky...

Unfortunately, it doesn't take that many floors to kill someone. Recently, a guy jumped off the 12th floor of the Contemporary Resort at Walt Disney World and hit the 3rd floor (where the shopping is) and died. For those who've never been to the resort, it's an A-Frame and every floor's balcony inside is straight down to the concourse floor which goes all the way across.

It's a shame to hear these kinda stories, but you know, it's difficult to get help these days. Often insurance doesn't pay or the person doesn't have insurance, so no one wants to see them, unless they are in such a state that it warrants locking them up. Maybe in this case, might not have been a bad idea, but it's often the cry for help that is the first sign unfortunately. The other side of the coin is that depression is not always treated by pills without being able to work through the actual problem. This often leads a person to believe that if medicine will not help them, then nothing can, which is wrong, but when in that mode, it's hard to see logic.

When I lived in SoCal (Barstow) we used to go to Vegas all the time. We were there for the grand opening of the Luxor (pyramid) BEFORE they installed the safety features for the top floors and they ended up having someone do a swan dive from the 40th floor I believe straight on down into the lobby. I heard it happened a few more times from some of the lower floors but that access to the top floors is now restricted to guests only and not just those gambling like it once was.

If he jumped, then I am sure he changed his mind when he realized he was completely air born.

At the same time, some people will die before hitting the ground.

I don't know what it has to do with anything, but what possible reason could you have for even thinking that he was pushed?
It was a suicide. It happens all the time.
