I got an unsolicited offer of $500 for vegetus.com. Vegetus is a latin word meaning something like lively. Vegetarian is derived from Vegetus, not vegetable, and most vegetarian sites talk about this, so I thought the domain had value.

I want to develop the site so I turned down the offer. The guy came back to me saying that $500 was an opening bid.

Anyway, nice to know someone else things the domain has value

Congrats :)
Are you willing to possibly sell if the price is right ?

If I were, you, I would let him know that you are planning to develop it, which is why you turned down his offer. Ask him to make you an offer that would MAKE you want to make you change your mind. (leave it open ended) You will then need to weigh the offer against your excpected profits from the developed site. The buyer might want it enough to pay enough to change your mind. (Try and decide at what price you would sell at ahead of time, but hold that figure to yourself) Good luck.

Yes.
Reply back with your intention of developing yourself.

I sold LLLLL.com for $5K in the same scenario.
It wasn't word. Just acronym for some obscure words to most people except me and the buyer.
It was so obscure that buyer had exact same meaning as I.

I am pretty sure this domain won't even sell for $1 at most domain forum ;)

He started with $200 and I said no thanks since I wanted to develop it and was in the middle of gathering contents.
He came back with $500 and I said "no thanks" and I replied with my definition of LLLL acronym
along with few articles I gathered for the domain.
Then, he knew I wasn't just trying to get more money and I really meant to develop.
He came back again with $5K and also said that's maximum he can pay and would understand if I still said no.

It still took me about one week to decide, but, ended up selling it for $5K :)

So, you never know how much the buyer is willing to pay for the domain.
