Very interesting article. Definitely gets you thinking about the possibilities of where Google could be going. Thanks for the read. :)

Definitely an interesting article. Just wait for them to build this network and all the anti-trust lawsuits to start pouring in. Then when their stock drops, invest heavily :)

Google just purchased GrandCentral, so they apparently have an interest in the telephone business.

I dont see why people would find this as a surprise. Traditionally Google has been an Internet business, but if you look at their overall focus and strategy as a company, it's easy to see that they're really in the wider business of connectivity. With mobile and Internet technologies blending together, it's not a giant leap for them to transition into further service offerings such as mobile and broadband. Obviously their ultimate goal is to get as many people as possible connected to the internet and using their services.

Google seems to be positioning itself to create it's own complete Internet experience for users. You can rest assured that they're not just buying random companies to add to their portfolio. All of their acquisitions are building towards a solitary, unified goal of market dominance. The best thing they can do at this point is to make sure that every single lawyer on their payroll is top of the line. :)

I would see this as more of a defensive play around the whole net neutrality issue. Google stands to lose more than anyone if the Telcos get their way.

Google already purchased skype a while back. I think they see the future convergence of traditional phone and IP networks as a future ad market.

Yes I think that too, and we must not forget that mobile phones are already connected with the internet and the internet advertising is already present on mobile phones, and some research projects want bring the possibility to be connected to internet using power lines, electricity, so the possibilities are vast.

Good article. Should be interesting to see how it all plays out over the next few years. Google is also one of the backers of .mobi

The only ones keeping the internet from completely shutting down or throwing a wrench into every business online, is companies like comcast/verizon etc who own the wires on the poles. Google I'm sure will try and buy them out at some point. They want 100% control but I dont see it happening. Then again, it is google.

Hmm..., I stand corrected. Somehow I thought Google bought it. I guess it just made more sense and it seems google had been buying everything else.
