Google Guide to Higher Rankings –

I have decided to roll up my SEO (search engine optimization) knowledge of 5 years into a guide to understanding Google and all of the current ranking factors that come in to play currently. I will break this into 2 section on-site and off-site factors.

Key factors to On-Site Ranking factors –

1.Common theme throughout a single Web page meaning the selection of 3 keyword per page that is consistent in all of the on-site factors.
2.Keyword placement in the title tag
3.Keyword placement in the Meta data
4.H1 tag using main keywords of concentration
5.H2 tag using main keywords of concentration
6.Keyword density measurement vs. competitors
7.Key word anchor text in onsite links
8.Proper navigational structure for easy spidering
9.Not using flash for navigation
10.Not using java script (most java scripting for navigation can be replaced with CSS)
11.Coding to W3C compliance

Key factors of Off-Site Ranking are –

1.A top 5 competitive analysis of your competitors ranking for the desired keywords.
2.Age of domain
3.Number of back-links to your main domain
4.Number of back-links to your site (inner pages)
5.Your sites PR (page rank)
6.Number of .edu, .gov back links (trusted sites)
7.Dmoz listing
8.Yahoo directory listing
9.Pages indexed in Google (good ways to do this is Google/ Yahoo site maps, High PR sites linking to your home page)
10.Article submission
11.Press release submission with embedded hyperlinks with keyword anchor text
12. Your content distributed with a RSS feed.

Some of this I am sure you know and some of the above I will be glad to expand on in this thread. Here is a quick overview of what not to do to obtain high rankings –

1.Keyword stuffing (super high density)
2.Link dumping (adding site to link farms ect..
3.Xss cross site scripting (to big to cover here)
4.Using comment tags to spam with keywords
5.Using a DIV tag to float content out of a users site
6.Going too heavy with keywords in alt text

1.Common theme throughout a single Web page meaning the selection of 3 keyword per page that is consistent in all of the on-site factors.
Common theme throughout a single Web page meaning the selection of 3 keyword per page that is consistent in all of the on-site factors. A lot of times webmasters make the mistake of trying to add a hug list of keywords that are similar to there web pages Meta data, hyperlinks and so on. Google prefers if 1 page is dedicated to a separate theme. Good aspect to take into consideration when designing a single web page on your website are the following –

1.Having a keyword in the web page URL such as www.website.com/keyword.html
2.Having your main keyword of focus in the first 3 words of your title tag
3.Having the same keyword placed near the beginning of your meta description and your meta keywords
4.Place the main keyword of focus in a H1 tag at the top of your document (picture you are writing a college term paper with a heading, sub heading and then body copy. If you start you’re thinking to content development in this manner and then building your website around the content format you will be starting of on the right foot).
5.Using descriptive anchor text link that focuses on your 3 keywords of focus

Remember if you are keeping the page theme consistent you also have to use other words to offset the keyword density. There is a fine line in-between content theme applied correctly and just seeming spammy.

2.Keyword placement in the title tag
3.Keyword placement in the Meta data

Here is a real good example of the proper way to position your keywords in your title and Meta data around a central page theme.

Example:
<TITLE>Educational children's software</TITLE>
Keywords in the <meta name="description"> tag
Example:
<meta name="description" content="Educational children's software makes learning just plain fun!">
Note: All META tags should go in the <head></head> section of your page.
Keywords in the <meta name="keyword"> tag
Example:
<meta name="keywords" content="educational children's software, educational software, childrens software, EDUCATIONAL CHILDREN'S SOFTWARE">
Remember that sticking in a bunch of keywords in the keyword META tag won 't get your page ranked high for all of those keywords. In order to get a top ranking with a keyword phrase, you have to use that phrase throughout your page, in your title tag, and in other tags as well.
Keywords in the <meta http-equiv="keywords"> tag
Example:
<meta http-equiv="keywords" name="keywords" CONTENT="educational childrens software">

Question:

What percentage do you think a domain name has to do with the keywords in SE results

Example:
Keywords are : Free Driving Direction
Site name: FreeDrivingDirection.com

How much better are the results or are they amplified by exact matches, is it worth going after big keywords or names, when better results can be accomplished by using other SEO principles.

I very much doubt that coding to w3c compliance has any effect on rankings

Also there is nothing wrong with using javascript as long as you dont use it to display content.
