New domainer here!

I would like your suggestions on how to go about the scenario painted below since I don't want to spend over 200 dollars on my first investment without being strategic.

Assuming google.com has just launched and might be getting a lot of traffic, I see the potential for a lot of visitors to visit similar addresses like gogle.com, gogle.net, google.net (notice the intentional misspellings and different TLD).

Questions:

  1. Is this a recommended strategy?
  2. Should I also approach Google to offer them the similar domain (since they didn't think they should have bought it by themselves initially)?
  3. What else could I do? (E.g. buy the similar one and offer ads on it, then (optionally) redirect it to the main name.)

This is the definition of Cybersquatting. You do not want to do any of that and would be wasting money.

  1. Is this a recommended strategy? - NO!
  2. Should I also approach Google to offer them the similar domain (since they didn't think they should have bought it by themselves initially)? ONLY if you want to hear from their legal counsel.
  3. What else could I do? (E.g. buy the similar one and offer ads on it, then (optionally) redirect it to the main name. - LEARN as much as you can before buying any domains.

Give the guy some credit, he was using google as an example not because he wants to infringe. Check for trademarks on the real name in your real life scenario and also determine if you want to spend or waste your money on someone elses idea as well. Good luck sometimes the other domains work but mostly dot com gets the most.

Yeah, but he’s still trying to cybersquat a brand like that, just on a smaller scale. Better for him to learn this here with some of these replies than go and waste his money, or worse, get into legal trouble.

No. You want to sell brands, not steal other businesses' brands.
