Well, Yugoslavia as a political entity is pretty much gone, so it would follow that each former republic of Yugoslavia would now want to manage its own ccTLD: .me (Montenegro), .mk (Macedonia), etc.

I can't imagine that any of these reorganized former republics would want to keep the .yu (given the bad blood of the political breakup), so it's inevitable that the Yugoslav registry would simply fold up.

Makes one pause in investing in obscure TLDs like .cm and, yes, .tv (which, when all is said and done, is still a ccTLD of a country whose political future may be sketchy).

I'm currently in Macedonia, a very different place than it was 20 years ago, just before the Balkan wars broke out. I was here then as well--can't seem to stay away. I suppose I like the Mastika and Rakjia too much.

;)

Bye bye .yu, hello .me :ghost:

Legal inheritor for co.yu is .rs (Serbia) and for cg.yu is .me (Montenegro). .yu was ccTLD assigned to Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and there is no correlation with .si (Slovenia), .hr (Croatia), .ba (Bosnia) and .mk (Macedonia). In practice, .yu domains will not stop functioning on 30.09. as it is stated. RNIDS will not deactivate .yu and ICANN didn`t still bring decision to delete .yu at that date. But yes, the end of .yu is very close, so goodbuy .yu!

I recommend you to eat pastrmajlija, try ajvar too and drink some Macedonian wine like is "Tga za Jug", but if you want to drink rakija then right stuff is Serbian rakija (eg. "Yellow wasp"), but be very careful with drinking rakija ;)

Ah, yes, it's ayvar season here, the smell of cooking peppers permeates throughout Skopje. Tga za Jug--Dobro!

The homemade rakija is best; a lot of people own their own mini stills. I don't know if it's legal, but there you have it. I like the Zolta brand as well.

One SIPS rakija and Mastika. Guzzle at your own risk.

;)

No, it happens once in a while. Other examples are .nato which was deleted when .int was introduced for international organizations. The ccTLDs .bu .cs .dd .zr have also been deleted due to name change of the country and political changes.

whats the fate of high traffic sites running on .yu domains?
I know they did have considerable time for changing. But still they might be missing some traffic which cant be even redirected or parked....

.su was also phased out, I believe there are a couple old domains still working, but no new registrations are allowed.

YU domain becomes history

Belgrade, 30th March, 2010- .YU domain stopped functioning at noon today, in accordance with the decision of ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers). Saying goodbye to the .YU domain, which became history, like other aspects of ex Yugoslavia, has been announced since March 2008.
Just to remind you-The official registration of the .RS domain started on 10th March, 2008. During the following six months, until 10th September 2008, the owners of the .YU domain were given priority to register the aforementioned domain with the .RS ending. This right was used by 19,372 companies in total.
Upon finishing the transition from .YU to .RS domain, approximately 4000 users of the .YU domain prolonged the lifespan of their .YU domains until 30th March, 2010. As of today noon, the remaining 4000 YU domains are no longer visible online.
Today at 6pm, Museum of Yugoslav History will be hosting the “farewell party” to the .YU domain. Effective today, the .YU domain becomes a part of the museum.
