Please advise what is meant by the term redemption period in the whois.

Plus if the name is not showing at snapnames or namejet where can you back order the name - someone who can offer a good catching service.
thanks

This is a 30-day period where the domain name is prepared for deletion. During this period, the domain name is removed from the "zone", which removes the domain from all DNS-servers and makes the domain name unavailable.

The reason for such a period is because there used to be cases where the registrars made errors that caused the domain name to be deleted without further notice. The registrant didn't notice anything until it was too late, because the domain status could change from "ok" to a new registrant within minutes. A more thorough explanation of this term can be found at ICANN

The most famous, besides those you mentioned, is Pool. If you've tried to acquire a domain name but realised that an other registrar got a hold of it, it might be that the registrar is acting on behalf of a second registrar. Pool, SnapNames and NameJet have a cluster of servers whose only purpose is to acquire domain names, and many of these servers are actually owned by other registrars in order to provide redundancy and full coverage.
