I think this change is only going to benefit a few people, if they change the whois info back to what it was before the lock was imposed. Just imagine all those domains bought from third parties or from GoDaddy Auctions reverting to the previous owner details. How is the new Registrar going to contact you to start the transfer process?

It seems kind of pointless that you have to unlock it and initiate the transfer, than once it gets rejected, contact someone.

I see problems with this.

If ownership has changed, then this new policy will hand the domain back to the seller/former owner.

Very bad idea.

To be honest, I like the domain lock. After winning an auction, I'd rather wait the 60 days.

Probably because for the most part, that's a long enough time for potential issues to be threshed out before making the switch. Payment disputes and all.

Personally, I think this is an arguably reasonable compromise (oxymoron, I know). Go Daddy's essentially the biggest target of (alleged) domain hijacking cases, and they want to keep that to the barest minimum possible.
Like anything, this is potentially going to have its own set of problems. Time will tell.

I don't see how GoDaddy are going to handle this, but the domain will still be in your account with the sellers registration details. Then (I'm guessing) you change the registrant/admin email back to you. Then you put in the transfer at the new registrar. I suppose this is why you have to request the unlock from a special dept set up for this purpose.

I also have no problem with the 60 day rule. I'd much rather push a sold name to a godaddy account, knowing that if there is a chargeback or fraudulent paypal account used to pay me, it's much easier to call my rep & send an email to undo@ rather than trying to pry it back from another registrar. If the buyer really wants the name enough to buy it, they can open a godaddy account and transfer it out when the 60 days is up.

I agree with you.

OK. I was interested to see how this was going to work. So I asked my account manager. He said, no problem, they'd been doing it for months already (nice of them to tell us about that change of policy. They were very quick to tell us when the couldn't help us any more). So I sent him a list of domains I wanted unlocked, so I could transfer them out. He replied I had to send the list of domains to [email protected] along with my Account Number an PIN. So I did, and they replied...

Thank you for your email. To remove the transfer lock on the domain names, please provide us with the following:

1. A completed 60-Day Lock Removal Request Form (attached).

2.Photo identification. Acceptable photo identification is clear, readable, and issued by the government. We must be able to clearly identify the pictured person, name, signature, and expiration date.

3. Business identification for the registrant, "Registrant Name" and "Registrant Name". The following are considered acceptable business identification:

Ø A copy of business license
Ø Tax certificate (number alone is not acceptable)
Ø Doing Business As documentation
Ø Fictitious Name documentation
Ø IRS 501(C)3 "Determination Letter" (You may request a copy of this letter by contacting the IRS at 1-800-829-4933)
Ø State issued certificate of tax exemption showing charitable status

You may scan or take a digital photo of the information and email it to [email protected].

Once we have received the documentation, we will further review your request.

There was no 60-Day Lock Removal Request Form (attached).

I don't think I can comply with 3. either.

So they are not exactly making it easy to remove this 60 day lock.

I also just received this from my account manager

Since those domains were purchased from another party and the legal owner really changed, the hold would not be removed. If you updated the contact info for your domains from Stu to Stewart then that is something we can revert back and remove the hold on.

So this 60-Day hold unlock is a bunch of crock!
