Has anyone had this happen before. I was searching through 3 letter domains today and found one that Godaddy said was available, so I went thru the registration process and everything went fine as usual. Well I checked my account a little later to make sure the name was there and it was not. I checked my Paypal account and the charge went threw, so I checked my e-mails to see if I had a conformation and it was there from Godaddy confirming the purchase. I rechecked my account and the name was still not there.
I just got this e-mail a minute ago.

The following domain name has failed to be registered:

BYJ.INFO

Error: BYJ.INFO: already exists in AFILIAS database

We will evaluate this error and retry the registration if appropriate.

If we are unable to successfully register the domain name, your account
will be credited accordingly. Please allow one business day for the
refund to be processed.

I've seen this a few times myself, now I double check with another registrar prior to regging. NameCheap.com has never steered me wrong yet.

It has happened to me many times with godaddy

Thing is it only happens with the really great names. It happened to me with JFK.us.

I checked at WWD and Godaddy. Go figure!! I should have checked else where.
