Today was my first encounter with a reCAPTCHA roadblock to get a simple Whois lookup at GoDaddy. Is this something very new?

Major intrusion IMO and doubt I'll be using GD whois any longer. The alpha system they already had in place was bad enough.

Anyone else encounter this -- thoughts?

Totally!!!

A shame, too, since they had been my go-to lookup source, just out of convenience.

They've been using it for quite some time now.

FYI -

Those using GD for regs pay close attention to your price at checkout. Seems GD is now automatically adding Privacy for 7.99, in addition to that junk freebie Office365 add-on. Grr...

Of all registrars, we find Godaddy to be most restrictive in giving the whois information. May be they want to protect their customers from spamming. Well, in a way you are getting some kind of domain privacy for free. An avid domainer will find it anyways, but that is extra effort. Domainers are not the ideal buyers from selling perspective anyways.

They're among the best, IMO. I just don't like the sneaky add-ons at checkout.

Do you mean reCAPTCHA with words or the full Google **TORTURE** CAPTCHA with blurry images that you have to get 30 right in a row to pass and most of the right answers Google has wrong because a bot generated it. Google's CAPTCHAs are always unsolveable by humans and meant just to torture them. However bots easily get by CAPTCHAs. Google typically gets the wrong answer on what is right on their CAPTCHAS because a bot made it but a bot will get the same answer as Google so Google CAPTCHAs keep humans out and only let bots in.

By the way, why do people ever use GoDaddy for domains? Everyone knows they steal domains.
