GoDaddy Selected as Top Domain Name Registrar

Tuesday, May 1st, 2007

The world’s biggest domain registrar is also the best, according to Domain Name Wire’s annual survey.

GoDaddy is the world’s largest registrar with about 20M domains registered (including reseller sites). It was also voted as the best registrar in the 2007 Domain Name Wire survey, taking 33% of the vote. Last year GoDaddy was also tops but received only 28% of the vote. Although not without controversy, GoDaddy has grabbed market share by offering domain names for affordable prices and investing heavily in marketing.

This year’s second place registrar was Moniker, which received 16% of the vote, up from 8% of the vote last year. The biggest loser this year was Register.com, which dropped from 18% of the vote to less than 1%. Here are the rankings based on total votes:

1. GoDaddy 33%
2. Moniker 16%
3. eNom 10%
4. Dotster 3%

When you peel back the onion you find that the overall vote percentages tell only part of the story. When you consider owners of large domain portfolios (greater than 500 domains), Moniker ties GoDaddy for top honors with 23% of the vote. eNom jumps to 20% of the vote. Furthermore, if you look at the number of votes compared to total domains registered, Moniker comes out on top.

Interesting news, especially for the folks at Moniker.

hopefully the pool size was large enough for only a few percent fluctuation... looking at the chart, it seems netsol has dropped out of the picture too!!

I will be honest, I started out with GoDaddy. I think I still have like 5 domains registered with GoDaddy. It is only big because of the advertising; Superbowl ads, ads in computer stores, ads all over the internet. GoDaddy doesn't have great communication, and the phone operators only know what you are talking about 1/3 of the time.
But they know how to make a company huge.

I've used a couple of different registrars, and Godaddy is my favorite.

Enom is my second pick, pretty nice, but prefer the ease of Godaddy.

I actually like GoDaddy's customer service even though they don't always help you out right away. At least they have customer service who respond and answer the phone.

I would probably use eNom more if they had Moniker's prices.

I agree, i take my hat out at their marketing dept but i keep my clothes (and hat) from their domain registration, domain aftermarket sections
It's how a normal company gets the 1st position by planting their logo at the top rank of domain names awareness

As stated by a few above, many people find that once the puffery is gone, GD is uncovered as a relatively imcompetent registrar that historically engages in arbitrary decisions (often at the expense of customers).

When I first signed up with GoDaddy I was impressed that about two days later I got a phone call (from a human being, not a recording) wanting to know if I had any questions or needed help with anything regarding my account. That type of personal follow-up gets high marks in my books.

CAUTION: sappy praise to follow!

I've been with Godaddy just over a year now and any problem
I have had turned out was because of my own doing. (all minor)
Not reading the orders or requests clearly, not setting things right...
whatever the case - Godaddy was more than willing
and ALWAYS able to solve the crisis at hand.
They have been there whenever I have needed them
and ALWAYS reply to my emails - I'm sure as time goes on
and I get more involved, there may be other issues crop up,
but Godaddy has my vote as I felt like a "little people" in a big domaining world, and Godaddy held my hand through it!

and no - I wasn't paid to post that - although I will accept offers :D

Kudos where Kudos is due :talk:

GD is the newbie welcomer to domains.
Thats why IMHO it got that placing.

Among domain pros, Moniker and eNom are probably the best (in that order).
again IMO and experience, having thousands of domains, GD is for newbies or low number domain holders.

I think GoDaddy is fine, they do always answer the phone when you have a problem plus I never pay more than $7, if that, to register a .com.

To bad GoDaddy can't backorder worth a $hit! They really suck at that!!!!

Just because they’re by far the most popular amongst newbies doesn’t make them a bad registrar; It’s actually their awful customer support that does that. :hehe:

Best wishes,
Kimmy

Its not just that.
They have a questionable record in grace period domains.
They have a system that is soooooooooo glitched and bait and trap.
They just arent up there for serious domainers.

The one nice things about GD that I'll give it credit for is that reps actually speak understandable english.

Godaddy is solid, and i've never had any problems with them. Their layout is easy and effective. NPers are always complaining about every registrar. No business is perfect.

GD is solid ?
I don't think forumers here in NP like to complain when someone offers something good and respects his customers

So even this is not a debate, GD is no choice for me
He can feed from other users (that like him for some reason)
