GoDaddy is getting pretty bulky

It took me about 6 minutes to renew 3 domain names on godaddy today. I am not complaining that much, like oh no 5 minutes, but it adds up. It is just that they have added a lot of unnessecary clicks - 2 full page offers of stuff that I had to click a small "no thanks, let me renew my domain names" button, an offer for private domain name registration that I thought I had to click to check out, but it wanted me to set up a new account for it so I clicked back and found I could register without it, and it kept asking me if I wanted to register the .biz and .net extentions of the same names for a special price.

I am computer literate, but it was like they were trying to confuse me into buying something else, which doesn't work, but I can imagine customers 'accidentally' adding the extra features offered due to confusion. I respect domain registration sites more when they make it easier for me to do things instead of harder and I use them more. Funny too, Godaddy doesn't really advertise many internal sites, but they advertise themselves like crazy on their own site. But in my opinion they aren't a terrible registration site, they offer many great services, it is just bulky at this point and surfing their site is not as pleasant and easy of an experience as other domain sites. But everyone still uses Godaddy so everyone has to use it. :bah:

Not "getting bulky".... HAS been bulky with un-needed shit.

That's why I went to Name.com, fast and cheap regs! :d

Only for names I buy and then transfer out ASAP :)

Yeah, I mean it was already bulky a year ago, but it has reached a new level of bulkiness.

I hate the new Black design. GoDaddy should have a site for people who own one domain (impulse buy after the Superbowl) and a different interface for people who register a few hundred domains a month. Since I am making a wish list, that interface should have a running ticker of what auctions are expiring at TDNAM in real time. That would be nice.

Yes, incredibly bulky. Compare that with fast interfaces, such as the very pleasant and easy one provided by Namecheap (although I had cases of pushing from account to account for which I had to ask for manual support, so it may not be the best place if you intend to push a lot).

Exactly what I have been saying in another thread. Domainers need a simple fast reseller-type template to get their jobs done. Else GD will lose some of us over time.

That's why I like Dynadot. Their interface is uncluttered and they do not bombard you with all those silly cross-selling screens. You should be able to register in just a few clicks.

Godaddy is just absurd with all the in your face sales tatics. Even when you finish your transaction after so many minutes, you still get the "but wait, perhaps we can interest you in something from our nice selection of kitchen sinks" page.

I think the entire development team at Dingdong Daddy is smoking something pretty strong. It could be tobacco, but who knows?

puff, puff, give :)

I'm not sure what the marketing gurus at Godaddy are doing. Call me old fashioned but I think "white space is your friend" and I always adhere to "K.I.S.S", keep it simple stupid!.

Google (along with it's super algo) would be a great example of those rules. Goddady on the other hand, not so much.

Good points, maybe they should have a seperate interface for people who deal a lot with domains, one without graphics I would hope. I mean think of Google and all its related services, they stayed with a clean interface and people love it. ...

I agree I like something more like Dynadot, I like it when it loads like a late 90's webpage would load, except now with a fast modem it's practically instant, minimal graphics, no confusing scroll to the bottom and click no thanks screens. (I think why they confused me when I renewed this time is I wasn't expecting them, i was like, wait, am I on the wrong page? I shouldn't be getting an advertising screen now when I just clicked renew.) And besides, no thanks screens are for smaller sites than godaddy and for ...other sites.

I noticed exactly the same thing as an orthogonally independent observation earlier today. Besides the bloat and stuff to appeal to the occasional user from the public, it took a long time for things to load. They should have a leaner expert mode.

I had to renew some domains and the cost privacy at GoDaddy was a killer. I asked for a break on the price and they said the best they could do was 20% off, so I transferred them to Answerable.com for a lower renewal rate and free privacy. So far, so good. We'll see.

I had to move all my websites because they put my account on a server with 4,000 other websites. Slow is not the word to describe the hosting service.

Of all the registrars that I do business with, Slack Daddy is the worst. However, Danica Patrick is nice to look at while navigating the twisting labyrinth they call a website. D-:

I have heard rumors that Godaddy improved their hosting, but in the end... Register your domains with a registrar get your hosting from a company dedicated to hosting. I don't know of any registrar that has good hosting and don't know of any hosting company that is a good registrar.

That sounds like excellent advice. I gave up drinking and now that the fog has cleared, many of Godaddy's product offerings have lost their appeal.

Godaddy has only one product as far as I am concerned, cheap domain registraions when you use the coupons.

As a domainer, the thing they have going for them, if you sell a domain name to another domainer you can be darn sure they have a Godaddy account and it makes for an easy transfer.

If it was not for the Godaddy coupon thread here, I would drop them like a bad habit. :)

their interface is very hard to find and hard to use.

I don't mind a bulky interface in exchange for cheap regs, extremely quick and easy transfers, and 24/7 customer support that is semi-competent.

They would win over a lot more customers if they didn't bring you through pages of up/cross promotions before checkout, but in this case the benefits outweigh the negatives.

Their hosting control panel desperately needs to be fixed though. The FTP "client" logs you out after about 60 seconds of inactivity.
