Is it true that you cannot modify CNAME records for domains at GoDaddy unless you use their hosting? I am trying and I simply cannot find how to, I see there's a "Total DNS Control" panel or something but it's telling me nothing more than 'not hosted here,' doesn't hyperlink me to any other page or anything.

It seems like you aren't using Godaddy's DNS servers. When I use their parking servers and then there's a "Total DNS Control" hyperlink at the bottom of that section. Click it and you can set cname, a, mx, etc... If your using someone elses nameservers, like a webhosts, you'll need to set the records there.

You certainly CAN modify CNAME records with godaddy. The problem is that your domain isn't using their nameservers (note: don't confuse using their nameservers with using their hosting services)
