When a domain is reged with GoDaddy and is about to expire, if I place a back order for it through Godaddy, is that my best chance of getting it? Will it still go through GoDaddy's auction (tdnam) or dies the backorder keep it from going to auction? Is there any better way to get a domain about to expire with GoDaddy?

Thanks in advance!

It will still go to auction. All GoDaddy expiring domains go through that process regardless of backorders.

Yep, just wait until the end to bid.

There is no benefit to bidding early on TDNAM. It just brings the other bidders out.

Freaking Godaddy has just failed to capture my backorder, and it was a domain registered with Godaddy! Now it's being transferred to silverbackdomains.com, which is a company affiliated with Snapnames.

It was a dropping (deleted) domain then.
Any dropcatcher could have caught it and Snapnames are usually doing best in that area.

Yep. That is the best place to capture it. I think your backorder will be placed as the first bid, anyhow.

I thought if the domain is registered with a registrar, then backorder from that registrar will be the most reliable ?

Nope. If it actually drops. Then the existing registrar has to compete with everyone else. So for a dropping domain you should use the best drop catcher, usually SnapNames. But it doesn't hurt to use NameJet and Pool as well.

GoDaddy backordering is VERY bad unless the domain is registered via GoDaddy themeselves.

Ive seen GoDaddy let a domain go avalible for moe than 30 minutes before it even registers the domain.

If you really want a domain, then backorder it with one of the three bigies: Pool, SnapNames, or NameJet.

Hope that helped.

You need to look at the actual status of the domain. If it's in pending delete, then it would already be too late to get it at GoDaddy. At that point you'll need to do as the others in the thread have already suggested - backorder at Snapnames, NameJet, etc.

I watched 2-3 names go through TDNAM and not get taken about 6 months ago. I thought I'd pick them up when they dropped as I didn't care about age.

Both got Snapnames backordered.

I am always shocked that people let them go at $5 then backorder them at $60 or whatever it is.

Not paying the $1000 they want either.

Actually, it's a bit more complicated than that. Up to 41 days expired you can transfer out for just reg fee. On day 42 they delete it from their registry. You now need to pay their Redemption Fee to recover the domain, until it goes into Pending Delete. When it goes into Pending Delete, it will drop. When it drops it is then a free-for-all, and GoDaddy cannot compete with the likes of SnapNames, NameJet, or Pool. If it is somewhere between day 42 and Pending Delete, you need to research who is the owner, and persuade them to pay GoDaddy's Redemption Fee, but by doing this, The original owner is then free to ask whatever they like for the domain. So it's a risky option.
