GoDaddy Changing Domain Name Backorder Rules

Multiple backorders will be accepted on domain names.

GoDaddy has informed Domain Name Wire that it is changing the way it handles backorders for domains not registered at one of The Go Daddy Group’s domain name registrars.

As early as next week GoDaddy will begin accepting more than one backorder on domain names. (Currently only one is accepted). If GoDaddy successfully captures the domain name and more than one backorder was placed, there will be an auction on TDNAM for the domain. Only the people that backordered the domain can participate in the auction.

The new system will be somewhat similar to a non-exclusive backorder on SnapNames. However, GoDaddy will still charge an upfront $18.95 fee for your backorder. If GoDaddy doesn’t capture the expiring domain name or you don’t win the auction, you can transfer your backorder to a different domain name.

A GoDaddy representative says the company is making this change based on customer feedback. Existing backorders will not be affected by this change. Note that the new policy does not apply to domains expiring from a GoDaddy registrar, which will continue to be auctioned at TDNAM.

Sounds to me like another cash grabbing scheme! You back order a domain, it goes to auction due to numerous other backorders. You don't end up with the domain because you were outbid or did not bother to bid and you are out $18.95!!

You are not out of $18.95 unless you won the auction, according to DomainNameWire ..

For some reason I get the feeling they started doing this several weeks ago.. I live on tdnam and noticed less names available all of a sudden... maybe it was just me.

it will be a war for top names at GD just like SnapNames and NameJet. soon i will tell my friends how we "used to catch names with Godaddy". fortunately, the new tasting rules have made it possible to hand register more names than we used to catch with a godaddy backorder.

I did. And they denied it. They said so 5 times in different ways.
They wouldn't just pull the rug out of their existing customers who build them up.

I did and Godaddy said No! They denied this rumor and said they would never do that to existing customers.

If so, Domain Name Wire owes Godaddy an apology.

andrewA - I'm not sure who you are, or if you're also the one that post a comment at DNW. No, I didn't have to contact GoDaddy to confirm it because they contacted me to tell me about it.

From some of the comments above I can tell there's some confusion. This only applies to domains that are not registered at GoDaddy. So those domains will still hit TDNAM as always, and anyone can bid on them. Only the domains not regged at GoDaddy or its affiliates will be in these private auctions.

Well, if this is true, then new backorder scheme certainly hasn't taken effect yet. Sex.com still has a big red 'X' over it.

This new scheme might prove advantageous for some of us. If another individual backordered a domain at GoDaddy before you did, now you have a chance to obtain it still (and for potentially less than the $59-$69 you would have paid at SN/Pool/NJ).

Is it legal for them to do so? Some people have a number of unused backorder credits which they bought to place backorders in the current system, not an auction-type system. This should not be a legal move on their behalf for owners of existing backorder credits that were purchased before the change. This should only apply to newly purchased backorders.

Yes, there are alot of people with backorders that will be turned into auction backorders. Not enough notice for us.

Bad news.

I have ~100 backorder credits. If they change the backorder rules, I no longer have meaning to work with them. Old backorders I will use and they will be converted to domains. But the new credits will no longer need for me.

Yes Domain, everyone one of us is in the same position. DomainNameWire has stood by his comments, so he we can assume he knows his sources and we are going to have the rug pulled out from under us. Well we at least know when DomainNameWire says something it is true.

Frankly, I would throw a fit and ask for a refund. Its not right that they change the rules after you make a purchase - why else would you pay for a backorder?

Quite true.

Its simply unethical.

You can not take money from a customer based on a certain set of rules, and then change rules and then expect them to suffer because of this.
