It most likely was bid on at Tdnam.com . So yes, godaddy backorder is a big waste of time and money.

Mostly, but not entirely :)

1) GoDaddy will capture virtually 100% of GoDaddy/WWD/BlueRazor domains which drop. They will then place the domain for auction at TDNAM with your backorder as the first bid. This kinda defeats the need to backorder a domain because they will place the domain for auction at TDNAM anyway. So you can just wait for the domain to appear at TDNAM for sale, and then bid on it. I sometimes still place a backorder though, because I can fix my opening bid immediately and don't need to worry about it again until I get the email from TDNAM that I've been outbid.

2) If it's not regged at GD/WWD/BR and you have some confidence it has no traffic/revenue, you can usually expect that GoDaddy will not catch the domain at the drop, but will capture it once the tasters have finished with it. To my knowledge they are the only company which continuously monitor domains and offer a service to captured dropped domains after they've been tasted. They have a good record on picking up these kinds of domains.

But snapnames.com is very expensive!(60$ at least) and I didn't find any cheap domain back order service.

the name went to snapnames.com, xxxfurniture.com was the name i backorder it was in process and everything then for some reason there was an error so they couldnt pick it up from wildwestdomains.com and now the bid is up to 200 for the name =( i could have had it for 20 bucks!!!

Tdnam.com also sucks.
In 2005 Oct, I was highest bidder($3,000) on the domain espnpoker.com And the auction was ended. So I wired the money. But they didn't transfer the domain name to me in the end. No replied to my complaint.
Of course money refunded.

From what I hear, backordering can make the domain noticeable (can/may remain hidden to the eyes of the potential buyer if nobody bid on it until time is almost up).

I just caught a backordered domain w/ GD, definitely worth the 18.99 for the name I caught, they are not the best but they got the name I wanted, I wonder why it didn't goto auction, maybe I was the only backorder?

SnapNames are expensive because there are so many bidders, but if you don't win, you haven't paid anything. At GoDaddy you pay up front, and if you don't win the domain you can't get a refund. You can only use the credit for another backorder until you win one.

This is true.

Then it probably wasn't regged at GD/WWD/BR. But if it was, I guess it just fell through a crack somewhere :)

If you backorder from a godaddy reseller and not through godaddy itself the domain will not go to TDNAM, I love godaddy b/o

Another GD tip: if you don't get the name, remember to remove it from your watch list. I missed a name and the company that got it, dropped it again after a few days of tasting so GD grabbed it for me then.

By then it was obvious to me it wasn't worth it but now I can't get a refund.
