GoDaddy .ASIA tricked me..

Hi all,

This is my first post and i hope to be more involved here in the near future but for now i wish to get your advice and help because someone recommended me about this forum telling me there are real pro's here regarding to domain names.

Well today i went to my account in godaddy where i have all my domains (NOT hosting) and saw their .ASIA banner registration.. so i took a look.

well as it written there in the table titled ".ASIA registration periods"

"Registered Trademarks applied before 12/6/2006."

so i thought i could enter my own domains

especially after seeing this:

"Landrush Pre-Registration 11/13/2007 – 1/31/2008
Pre-register any name not containing a trademark or any name containing a trademark applied for after 12/6/2006. A trademark is not required to pre-register for the landrush period."

And down down in the requirements tab:

"Who can register .ASIA domain names?

* Companies, organizations, events, and individuals.
* NOTE: All .ASIA registrations must include at least one contact who resides in one of the .ASIA countries.*"

So i said ok (all fine by me and i am in ASIA applied country) lets see what available.

I found great domain names... i thought to myself and each costs $40 for 2 year registration because of the pre-registration.

I said ok i bought few domains.

Then in the registration part there was some weird field of identifaction number and i entered my id (maybe stupid but heck these are really good domains)

anyway i thought i am the proud owner and i was happy then i checked out my domain account and saw they are pending... weird.. after a few checks i realized that the .ASIA does not even active so i need to wait to the "landrush" period.

But what struck me is that i visited http://dotasia.org and saw that those who can register now are only companies or those who documentary of companies in order to proof... and i asked proof what? i am individual.

Also it seems that if 2 companies wants the same domain they will auction for it or something like that, so if i bought the domain i still need to pay more in order to get it?

I am terribly confused on the matter and don't know what to do, try to keep these domains' which i know that if i will go to auction with them (still i don't know if i got it right) i won't have the money for it OR just ask for refund.

So if you can help me get things straight .. and i am talking about general domains like beer.asia sex.asia and more... (i did not purchase these of course )

Sorry you got taken in by this, but I'm not super clear on what it is exactly. I think the "landrush pre-registration" means that you can register now and see if you got in early enough or with a name no one else wants so you have a chance.

Godaddy support is generally really good, so I would call them up and act like a newbie and they should explain and let you know what your choices are so you can decide.

I will warn you that I have read a few things that indicate .ASIA may not be all that great, at least for quite a while. Do some searches and you should find out some information and opinions about it. Good Luck!

The current pre-registration period which is going on in Godaddy is if you buy a domain, it will be showing under your account but in starting February 2008, there will be auction held IF that particular domain which you have registered is also pre-registered by someone else too. Whoever pays more in that auction will win that domain and the remaining bidders will be refunded the money into their accounts (not in godaddy's account) but I have read somewhere you will get the refunded money in your Paypal (IF you have paid through Paypal or will be sent to your Credit Card if you have paid through it)

I hope that's clear and if not, do not hesitate to ask me questions related to it as I have pre-registered +10 domains with Godaddy and planning to do some more before Jan ends.

.ASIA domains are restricted to people who either live or have a business presence in an Asian Pacific Country.

ICANN - List of Asia Pacific Countries

If you live in one of these countries, than you may purchase .ASIA domain, for me living in Australia, i simply used by australian business number for the id section.

Thats correct, if you want to register one immediately you have to be a business and it must relate to your business or trademark, it also costs a little more.

As you have registered in the 'preregistration' landrush this means that your domains have simply been listed to be purchased as soon as the .asia market opens up to the general public in 'late?' February 2008

In other words, GoDaddy will automatically submit your domains to be registered as soon as the market opens up.

However if any one else within a '24 hour period?' registers the same name it goes to auction, between yourself and the other registers.

Any domains which you don't end up getting you wont be charged for.

Obviously if you tried to get sex.asia, expect yourself to be at an auction!

lucky i read this before I handed over any money to godaddy. I thought it was fishy when sex.asia came up available.

Hi, I will see you at the auction, i also preregisterd sex.asia, thought it would be nice investment for my kid! Here you go son, sure the neighbor bought his son a new porsche, but hey, i got you sex.asia what more could you want!

By the way, I emailed Godaddy to ask why the .asia registration was removed from the site the next morning, they sent me a response saying that they have removed the .asia preregistration from their site until after the landrush period ends. I guess they did the math on the credit card charges and figured it was not worth refunding 1500 sex.asia low bidders to make 10 Dollars on the one that got it!

Does anyone have any information on
1) What the Auctions are all about on the DOTASIA page

2) If money is held from the registrar, during landrush, prior to an auction ending...ending after the 12th of March which I referenced above.

3) Pre-Registration, during Landrush, seems a little, or a lot dangerious. Would you essentially be creating auctions with your self from either your registrar who inturn decides it wants that name, with another registrar who views you registered it during landrush, or an individual, who registered it during landrush.

4) Will the names registered for during Landrush be viewable through querues and/or dotasia etc.... I can't find any information on this and don't know if there is a way to know until Landrush begins.

5) Who and were can these names be bought and sold. I havn't found anywhere???
Godaddy does not allow .EU ...so... SEDO sell's most everything...but no reference to .ASIA....anyone know where???

I think this verify's the PDF on DOTASIA as well as telling us it's a marketing technique.
