Godaddy, Afilias & Me-Net to run .ME TLD

Four months ago, ICANN/IANA assigned the .ME ccTLD to Montenegro. Once the news was out, the Internet community immediately realized the branding potential of the extension. The country declared independence in 2006 from the former state union Serbia and Montenegro. The government of Montenegro has selected Godaddy, Afilias & Me-Net (a local company) to run the .ME tld in partnership under their new alliance called doMEn. The contract lasts for 5 years I believe.

Godaddy will be marketing the .me domain and Afilias, which currently acts as the registry for .INFO, .ORG, and certain ccTLDs will provide the registry infrastructure for the new .ME domain.

Would agree with you there, And I think godaddy have seen this as a great chance to make a few more $$$,

Nice sounding ext though, but just do not see it going anywhere

I think .ME is a great extention, a lot better than .NAME or similar stuff.

However, I just have no trust in GoDaddy. Used them once, nothing but problems. Since then I stay away from them. When I read their involvement in .ME my enthousiasm dropped, unless it will be Afilias running it with GD only involved in promotional activities. I have trust in Afilias (they do a good job on .INFO) but no trust at all in GD.

Also, I wonder if many Montenegran sites will use the .ME extention. Let's not forget .ME is really Montenegro's ccTLD, but I see it becoming something like .TV with more foreign registrations than locals claiming a .ME domain.

Before everybody gets overenthousiast, will there not be some sunrise period to assure the people and companies that are actually in Montenegro can get their hands on the best domains?

Guess this is another example by the way for the interesting debate if it is justified for a country selling its ccTLD as if it were a generic one. In cases like .TV you can say it is understandable because if they restricted it to Tuvaluans there would be an extremely small target audience and hardly any registration activities. But Montenegro has over 1500000 people and a very decent penetration, so you can really ask yourself if they need to parade their extention to the outside world...

Very disappointed. I entered in the domaining biz to grab some money for myself for the .me launch, hoping that it will pass quietly. Now with Godaddy this dream of mine is gone bye bye.

Anyway, I'll try to reg at least Alex.Me, so folks stay away from it.

The only successful vanity is .TV. Whilst .me sounds like .name = crap

I'll stick to .com, .org, .co.uk, .eu, .asia, .com.au and .mobi and if it ever comes out .xxx

I think .ME has a lot of potential, a lot more than .name really. But I don't trust GoDaddy's involvement. Still, I would like to get a .me domain, if Afilias is in control at least.

And the extention can lean for some really great hacks that will be worth decent money.

.me has a very nice potential, definitely better than .name!
I was checking today available names (not reserved for 'premium auctions') and found some that could be worth something. of course only words that go well with ... me in English are worth registering.
