This is a bit of a review and a bit of a vent... I understand that Gname has an account here and it would be great if they can reply with their thoughts on this.
But I'll start with a simple, honest question - why would ANYONE use Gname? What is one thing that they do better than ANY other service? I'm genuinely interested to know.
I bought a premium domain about a year ago - paid 4 figures for it - and it just so happened to be in Gname.
Signing up for an account there was painful. One of the worst UIs I've ever seen.
If I wasn't told that it's legit from the seller, then I would never trusted my personal info in that company.
But I signed up, and for the life of me I don't know how I forgot to transfer my domain out to one of the companies I normally use - it's possibly because it was too complicated to figure out how to unlock and so I couldn't do it on the spot.
So I signed up, got the domain, and then that was that, until last week. That's when I got a notification that my domain was "deleted". The reason was that it expired, and then the time passed and I didn't renew it.
Why on earth would they notify only at deletion and not when it's about to expire, when it's expired, or even when it's pending deletion like every other domain service???
Sure it's my fault for forgetting, but how does this make any sense?
After struggling through the UI, I figured out how to open a support ticket - I opened it on the day I received that email. I asked them why I wasn't notified earlier and received a very nonchalant response - possibly by a bot? - that they send emails before, during, and after... Even though I explained that they hadn't. Note that the reply did not say that they sent ME those emails - just that they do. As if it's asking about their typical process rather than complaining about how they failed me.
The reply also said that I can backorder the domain - my domain - which I did.
It took me about 5 full minutes to figure out how to "fund" my account through a 3rd party payment service that felt shady, much like everything else on this site. I also had to pay extra fees to "fund" my account. Why can't I just pay for my backorder like I do on every other domain service??
Turns out that the domain went to auction, so now I had to figure out how to use the auction system too, and deposit funds to place bids.
They had to send a code to my email (WHILE I'm already logged in so not sure why they needed to reverify?), sliding 2 bars to prove that I'm human (AFTER sending the code and everything), and then I had to go back to a third party service to add more funds to my account.
The third party payment service didn't confirm that the transaction was successful, so I had to "guess" that it was, and then I had to go back to the Gname site and hit "Recharged" so that they can realize that I had made the payment and add the funds to my account.
The whole time I'm thinking - what the hell is going on?! Why am I even on this site??
The only time I've seen things like this is when I was trading crypto and was trying to "swap" mainstream coins to access the underground ones. Why would I have to jump through so many hooks to buy legitimate domains???
So I genuinely need to know -- why does anyone use this site???
As you can imagine I lost the auction - I lost by less than $10... because the auction ended at about 4-5am my time so I was asleep. Obviously I'm extremely bummed about this one given my investment in this domain, but I'm also actually baffled that this company exists.
Plus - if I'm not mistaken - my money is now STUCK in Gname?? I cannot seem to find a way to withdraw my funds... If anyone knows how I can do that please do share.
