Gname Is Possibly The Worst Domain Service I've Ever Used

This is a bit of a review and a bit of a vent... I understand that Gname has an account here and it would be great if they can reply with their thoughts on this.

But I'll start with a simple, honest question - why would ANYONE use Gname? What is one thing that they do better than ANY other service? I'm genuinely interested to know.

I bought a premium domain about a year ago - paid 4 figures for it - and it just so happened to be in Gname.

Signing up for an account there was painful. One of the worst UIs I've ever seen.
If I wasn't told that it's legit from the seller, then I would never trusted my personal info in that company.

But I signed up, and for the life of me I don't know how I forgot to transfer my domain out to one of the companies I normally use - it's possibly because it was too complicated to figure out how to unlock and so I couldn't do it on the spot.

So I signed up, got the domain, and then that was that, until last week. That's when I got a notification that my domain was "deleted". The reason was that it expired, and then the time passed and I didn't renew it.

Why on earth would they notify only at deletion and not when it's about to expire, when it's expired, or even when it's pending deletion like every other domain service???

Sure it's my fault for forgetting, but how does this make any sense?

After struggling through the UI, I figured out how to open a support ticket - I opened it on the day I received that email. I asked them why I wasn't notified earlier and received a very nonchalant response - possibly by a bot? - that they send emails before, during, and after... Even though I explained that they hadn't. Note that the reply did not say that they sent ME those emails - just that they do. As if it's asking about their typical process rather than complaining about how they failed me.

The reply also said that I can backorder the domain - my domain - which I did.

It took me about 5 full minutes to figure out how to "fund" my account through a 3rd party payment service that felt shady, much like everything else on this site. I also had to pay extra fees to "fund" my account. Why can't I just pay for my backorder like I do on every other domain service??

Turns out that the domain went to auction, so now I had to figure out how to use the auction system too, and deposit funds to place bids.

They had to send a code to my email (WHILE I'm already logged in so not sure why they needed to reverify?), sliding 2 bars to prove that I'm human (AFTER sending the code and everything), and then I had to go back to a third party service to add more funds to my account.

The third party payment service didn't confirm that the transaction was successful, so I had to "guess" that it was, and then I had to go back to the Gname site and hit "Recharged" so that they can realize that I had made the payment and add the funds to my account.

The whole time I'm thinking - what the hell is going on?! Why am I even on this site??

The only time I've seen things like this is when I was trading crypto and was trying to "swap" mainstream coins to access the underground ones. Why would I have to jump through so many hooks to buy legitimate domains???

So I genuinely need to know -- why does anyone use this site???

As you can imagine I lost the auction - I lost by less than $10... because the auction ended at about 4-5am my time so I was asleep. Obviously I'm extremely bummed about this one given my investment in this domain, but I'm also actually baffled that this company exists.

Plus - if I'm not mistaken - my money is now STUCK in Gname?? I cannot seem to find a way to withdraw my funds... If anyone knows how I can do that please do share.

I don't know about you, but gname warned me about my domain expiring three times: two months before, one month before, and a couple of days before it expired

If I'm not mistaken, you can get a refund via ticket system if you topped up via paypal, card or alipay

That's certainly a terrible situation. I've only used Gname once and I agree wholeheartedly with your sentiment on how shady the site feels.

The UI absolutely does their company NO justice.

That's what they said, but in this case it didn't happen. The last email I have from them (before the deletion confirmation) was from September of 2024... My guess here is that maybe they send the reminders to the registration email (which maybe I had left the sellers) but the deletion confirmation to the account email (which was mine)? Just guessing here. But I certainly did not receive reminders.

I do not see an option to get a refund - I used crypto because I did not want my credit card going on that site...

Please help me understand - why do you use them?

Hey there. This sounds unusual. Could we trouble you to DM us your UID, the domain in question, and your support ticket number please? Thanks very much.

We hear you on the UI, and we understand critically it's not ideal at its current state. It's on us to do better, and we're reiterating our site at the mo.

For your other questions, please reach out to us here via DMs.

This pathetic response (my emboldening) is something I have heard from many modern websites.

Pathetic and pithy excuses for shambolic and lame thinking, execution and performance.
Why isn't your site already "ideal" and "better" from the getgo?
You hear us? Really? So, you just fake listen and don't bother fixing your inadequacies and defects?
What is wrong with you that you can say these things without shame and like they don't matter?
Why are you and so many other sites happily languishing, every single day of your existence, in "not ideal" mode and happily producing a pile of steaming junk?

I wonder how many times you have told customers/users "We gotta do better" and/or "We're working on it"?
And yet, your site is still crap.
Your name was registered in 2001. It is now 2025. That is 24 years its been in existence and yet, here we are.

Is your junk site what you envisaged when you sat around a table and hashed out your plan for your site?
Is your site what got your excited? Is this result what propelled you to do all the work you did?
Have you lost heart, motivation and energy?

Are you all just waiting for the day your site dies, because that is the direction it is going in.

You are a disgrace and embarrassment to the domain name world.

We primarily work with Asian domainers, and our current UI works exceedingly well for our current community because that's what this side of the world is used to. Having said that, we recognise that this doesn't work for the other side of the world and which is what we're working towards to. Hope this helps.

Do you say this anywhere on your website?
Do you flash up a warning when someone outside "Asia" tries to register for an account?
Do you block people who are outside "Asia" from opening an account?
Do you do anything to tell people outside "Asia", "We're setup for "Asian" people, so if you're not "Asian", you're gonna have a crappy experience"?

There are other issues with your operation that have been outlined on this site and likely elsewhere, that have nothing to do with your regional focus.

I know Gname far too well, which is why I always transfer my domains out immediately after any auction ends.

In addition, Japan’s GMO Onamae.com is also engaging in what appears to be fraudulent practices. Recently, they have been offering “free” domain registrations that are secretly bundled with rented servers. There is no clear notice, no email notification, and no price disclosure. Users only find out when they are suddenly charged for a server they never intended to purchase.

Hello there, I sent you the info on Tuesday -- happy to continue the conversation in this thread as long as we don't use any personal information. Please also consider the replies to my support ticket, which I found to be a bit odd.

Also, would you please help clarify --- can I withdraw my money? That is money that I deposited only for the purposes of bidding on that auction, so I would love to take it back.

Hey. so that's not what we meant!

So, GNAME trace our roots to the Asian region and so our tech stack and UX are built for such. We're cognizant that it's not ideal for the rest of the world and we're not trying to say we're not doing anything about it; in fact, it's one of our high-priority projects in the near horizon.

We're building a team and expanding our collective experience so that we can better serve the community no matter which part of the world you're in. In the meantime, please feel free to drop us suggestions through DMs!
