Do you need solid .EDU links? Wouldn't you prefer to be able to have an entire blog (or as many as you want) centered around with your keyword?

Little to none. I've only used this blog for my own personal link building (I think it has 6 posts as of right now, 3 of which have links). The main purpose for these posts would be for you promote them and build up their rankings and then in return it would really help your "money" site rankings.

It is. It's a permanent .EDU blog post with your backlinks in it. You can build links to the .EDU post and make it an incredibly powerful backlink.

Totally right, they're definitely worth a small price (or a good bit of time) for them. You can always build up the PR of a link, you can't always find a solid link to build PR to.
