$1000 is just a sand in the desert.
Couldn't earn anything with only $1000, especially if you are a newbie.
Want to earn money from domain ? you have to buy more quality domains ( the average of sales ratio is 3%-5% of your total portfolio).
So if you have have at least $30k, you can consider. But if you have just 1k 10k,it's better to invest in stocks or in your knowledge about retailing industry than domaining.
I'd do exactly what I'm doing now and buy domains at closeout and/or low-competition auctions (which is now starting to do quite well for me).
The trick is to take time to target really good names that have a high likelihood of getting missed by most other domainers. You'd be surprised how many great domains slip through the cracks every day!
To give you an idea, for a while last year I posted a lot of what I was acquiring in this thread:

I'd certainly forget about hand registrations these days. Your talking days of work just to find one or two maybes at best. Yes, Closeout auctions from drops if I was interested in putting another $1k. It will still take you a day of work to find the odd one or two potential goodies that haven't already been bid into the $xxx +
The issue really being have you got the Skill-Set to spot those goodies
