Freeceive // dot // com

Bought: $4
Sold: $2500

After my first sale (Bookworm), and 2nd (Rewired), and 3rd (Longevica) I'm happy to share the details of my 4th larger domain sale for Freeceive (completed in December)!

Like Longevica I originally bought this domain at $5 closeout at Godaddy (-$1 bulk discount for buying 5 at a time). Technically you could say it cost me $12.50 including the renewal.

I liked Freeceive as a compound of Free and Receive. I envisioned some form of promotion or sampling marketing company sending users free samples or free offers. Nothing on the website yet other than the very short definition, which somewhat confirms that the end use will likely be similar to what I had originally imagined for the domain:

-ceive
comes from Latin, where it has the meaning "get, receive".

Unfortunately for the rest, it's not as juicy or detailed as my first two sales, and there are no longer email interactions to share.

Like Longevica this sale was done via Afternic .. simply one day in early December out of the blue I received the following email:

"Great news, freeceive (// dot // com) has sold via Fast Transfer through our DLS Network.

No action is needed from you at this time. You will receive an email update within 8-10 days regarding your payment."

8 days later I received an email saying the transfer was completed and to expect an email 1-3 days later with payment details.

3 days later I got a confirmation the funds had been sent.

I had listed the domain at $2500 (again like Longevica) I didn't even remember the price I had originally set .. lol).

Overall I'm happy with the sale and price .. I think it was a good sale for me and a great unique and powerful name for the buyer.

I have a smaller mid-range $xxx sale to report from December as well, but that wraps up my first full fiscal year after starting "Domaining" (as opposed to collecting domains for possible future development).

Nice sale, congrats!

Is the 5x bulk discount still going on, do they apply it automatically, or is it a code?

It's something available for as long as I can remember. It's automatic and you don't need a code. However:

1) All 5 domains need to be purchased in the same transaction.
2) It is only a discount of $5 for multiples of $5
(meaning you will no get $7 off if you buy 7 domains .. you will only get $5)
3) The discount applies to any domain at closeout from $5 to $11 ($5, $8, $9, $10 and $11)

To be honest .. when I started out I always tried to make purchases in blocks of 5 closeout domains. Now I'm a little pickier and buying less than when I started .. I maybe buy 5 at a time once or twice a month now at most.

I think I can almost blame the discount for encouraging me to buy names I might otherwise have not .. lol. But I certainly have saved as well as my ~1500 domain portfolio has a large number domains I grabbed at closeout. But I'm still happy with the vast majority of my purchases in 2017 (I started buying more in fall 2016). That being said I've learned a lot in my first year and a bit after seriously shifting into domaining (as opposed to mostly just buying and holding domains for potential future development).

Congrats! 4 good sales is nothing to sneeze at in your rookie year, good for you!

I have a question, but first:

Thank you for your detailed and generous posts. The word forum goes back to the ancient Romans and the importance that they gave to gathering and *discussing*. I've learned a LOT here, but from relatively few contributors IMO (at least in relation to the number of members).

Granted, it's the nature of forums to lose members as they lose interest, or no longer have the need to keep learning or checking in for updates. Still, great to see a "greenhorn" with so much solid advice and detailed successes....keep it up!

QUESTION: How long might you have held on for an enduser on this last one? The two dictionary words are clear winners, and the brandable sale was good too....but I wouldn't have expected someone to find this domain during a search session. Does it surprise anyone else?

I "played around" registering domains a couple of years ago. A bunch of clunkers, but also a few that I saw value in. PinSpy was one, and HeardLive was another, both in com.

Both were purchased by whoever bought them when I let them drop. I thought the first one would be perfect for either a spy cam or as an algorithm software for Pinterest (it's now a site for phone surveillance software) and Heard Live redirects to the main site of a company specialized in live music. So now I'm kicking myself for not "believing" in those names; but without any sales under my belt.....I had no reason to trust my instincts.

Anyway, now that yours has sold, you can say that you would have hung on as long as necessary....but would you have???

Have a great weekend,
Scot

Well .. here's the story ...

Bookworm // dot // co (not .com)
I bought at auction at the very very start of when I made the decision to be a domainer. I paid $52 plus $25 renewal ($77 total) for it. Not only would I not have renewed that one .. but I would never had bought it at that price today. to me it's a possible by handreg with a significant coupon (certainly no more than $10 total). It's not a domain I'd hold at full .co pricing.

Rewired // dot // co (not .com)
I bought a couple months later (Fall 2016) right when I'd say I really got into domaining. It in fact was a "handcatch" .. meaning I got it at the drop .. but didn't pay the extra fees to a dropcatch service .. it cost what I thought was $1.99 (although it turns out a bunch of .co domains I thought I bought for what was being advertised at $1.99 at godaddy, they were actually charging me $7.99 .. still cheap .. but big difference between $2 and $8). Honestly speaking .. I really don't know if I would have either bought or held it for the full $25/year a .co costs ... I'm almost thinking not .. as my focus mostly now is .com .. but I most certainly do buy other extensions if they are monster key words/terms that also fit the TLD or just makes a solid generic brand. Not too long ago I grabbed Burgandy // dot // co (I think at closeout or at $12+renewal). But Burgandy is vastly stronger than Rewired.

Next comes the 2 .com's ... both I bought at $4 closeout ($5 -$1 volume 5-pack discount), so effectively $12 including renewal.

Longevica // dot // com
I would still be happy buying this at $5 + renewal today. Luckily enough the vision I had for it ended up being EXACTLY who the buyer was .. pharmaceutical. I definitely would have held it at $8/yr.

Freeceive // dot // com
this one is a little trickier ... I certainly had a vision for it .. I have no clue who bought it (still leads to a small little page with definition of the "word". I'm only guessing they're going to use it for some sort of promotion service where people get samples for free or coupons or something marketing related like that. It definitely isn't Longevica .. but for Longevica there are other decent made up brandable options out there .. Freeceive is actually kinda hard to replace .. depite the fact it's a completely randomly made up word. The science of made up words is something that could be discussed for years and we'd not even cover 1% .. lol. I'm thinking it doesn't quite make my current "extreme value" quality cut .. but to be honest .. I'm not sure .. so hard to say after the fact after knowing somebody actually did buy it for $xxxx! lol

Exactly how long would I hold names for is hard to say .. I'm only in my first renewal cycle .. and I'm already past the point where I had to decide on the names I never should have gotten in the first place .. lol .. admittedly at the start of renewals I probably did renew a few more than I should have .. but now I'm getting better at cutting the chord .. however the bitter twist of irony is that now I'm getting to the point where a year ago my domain buys were significantly better than when I first started .. so i'm renewing over 90% of dot coms . .a little less on others .. the rate is obviously quite a bit lower on domains I got super cheap with coupons.

Regarding your PinSpy and HeardLive .. I'd never had touched though .. HeardLive isn't the right tense and is just a bit awkward to say in brand term ... PinSpy I wouldn't have bought mainly because I'd never had seen a link with Pinterest .. BUT .. it's a good link .. and that's the thing with going through the lists .. some names are obviously .. but when you dread deeper into the lists where fewer people check .. there are some names where you see something someone else won't. Obviously with all the names with bids that everyone checks you'll end up with 2 people seeing the same thing .. but if you go through 5-8k names per day like I do .. you're most certainly going to cross the occasional name that just cries out for an end user .. where the vision is clear like I had with Longevica and Freeceive (I'm still assuming with that one .. lol). You most certainly don't need to even be right all the time .. you just need to be right often enough to pay your other domains and renewals .. lol .. admittedly I'm not quite there yet .. but I was shamefully disorganised and of the small numbers of domains I did list I did not even listed everywhere.

Last year was really a perfect storm of raging disasters (non-domain world related) for me .. things still are far from perfect now .. lol .. but much better .. and more importantly I'm now pushing everything else (aside from my real world job) aside for a while to get my domains reorganised and back on track.

I have LOTS of people asking me for advice here all the time ,, but ironically I've only been "domaining" a little over a year .. and I'm still solidly in the red .. although the last 6 months on paper have been in the black .. so there is momentum on my side .. plus I was also extremely handicapped by not having most of my domains listed most of that time .. I'm not too worried about my future in domaining .. I just need more time to get organised .. maybe cut up my credit card .. and hope that in the 2 weeks it takes to get anew one I'll spend all my "list scanning time" on "domain categorisation / pricing / organisation" .. lol.

Sigh .. i guess writing long posts like this certainly doesn't help? lol

I've shelled out a lot of advice here and there .. it's mostly my opinions .. but this one is fact ...

DO NOT BUY ANY MORE DOMAINS IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE TIME TO MANAGE THEM EFFECTIVELY!

Congratulations...many people would have priced that name at 250...as you demonstrate through your success, higher numbers can be achieved if you price domain names well.
