I did not order a ton of them but I bought the extras that I did order to my buddies computer store and he is giving them away to his customers.

I installed it on an old machine, a 650 and other then getting used to such a slow machine it runs fine. In fact it is awesome compared to the XP Home that had been running on it.

Anyone have a link? I would like to hand some out at a meeting i have in march

You can always Google the link: "ubuntu cd".. I avoided putting it here because so many were abusing the link and ordering many more than they had plans for. It may be free to the end-user but someone still pays for the distribution and ordering 1000 for no good reason is not right, IMO.

I think the person paying for them is not short of cash...

Am I right in saying that the man who started Ubuntu sold his software company for $700million?

That could be.. but it's still senseless and rude to order more than you have a use for..

Don't get me wrong, I think it's a waste to order 1,000 CD's just to use as a frisbee.

I just wanted to make it clear that it's not like we've got some charity backing Ubuntu.

I know... I wasn't referring to you in particular.. it was a general statement.

Thanks for the info on this, I've been looking to try any distribution of Linux on my computer... I was on dialup for a long time and wasn't able to download anything.

Heh I got 60 packs of Breezy Badger. I still have many left here because most of those to whom I gave didnt use the Cds much. I certainly wont give it to them who dont really show excitement or care to learning it even after my clearifications about its superiority over Windows. But I have given some Cds in some institutes here who were running older pirated copies of Redhat. They are happy and I am glad as well.

Sometimes I think that ...

After a nuclear war there'd be nothing left on earth but cockroaches trying to eat Ubuntu CDs :hehe:

Just a note.

If you are using this o/s be sure to update it. A security issue has been found:-

===========================================================
Ubuntu Security Notice USN-261-1 March 10, 2006
php4, php5 vulnerabilities
CVE-2006-0207, CVE-2006-0208
===========================================================

A security issue affects the following Ubuntu releases:

Ubuntu 4.10 (Warty Warthog)
Ubuntu 5.04 (Hoary Hedgehog)
Ubuntu 5.10 (Breezy Badger)

The following packages are affected:

libapache2-mod-php4
libapache2-mod-php5

The problem can be corrected by upgrading the affected package to
version 4:4.3.8-3ubuntu7.15 (libapache2-mod-php4 for Ubuntu 4.10),
4:4.3.10-10ubuntu4.4 (libapache2-mod-php4 for Ubuntu 5.04), or
5.0.5-2ubuntu1.2 (libapache2-mod-php5 for Ubuntu 5.10). After a
standard system upgrade you need to restart Apache with

sudo apache2ctl restart

to effect the necessary changes.

Details follow:

Stefan Esser discovered that the 'session' module did not sufficiently
verify the validity of the user-supplied session ID. A remote attacker
could exploit this to insert arbitrary HTTP headers into the response
sent by the PHP application, which could lead to HTTP Response
Splitting (forging of arbitrary responses on behalf the PHP
application) and Cross Site Scripting (XSS) (execution of arbitrary
web script code in the client's browser) attacks. (CVE-2006-0207)

PHP applications were also vulnerable to several Cross Site Scripting
(XSS) flaws if the options 'display_errors' and 'html_errors' were
enabled. Please note that enabling 'html_errors' is not recommended
for production systems. (CVE-2006-0208)

you need to go to www.ubuntu.com to order it. Click on Shipit-free cds. It's to anywhere in the world. Good luck!

They are actually funded by Canonical, which is also the Shuttleworth foundation. The Shuttleworth Foundation funds a lot of open-source projects. You could get funding, if they approve you, if you actually have a good open-source project!

Yeah, you're right that person who owns ubuntu is rich and do this for free.

What is truly pathetic is that some people are listing these on Ebay. While some of them are outright selling them others are "giving them away" but charging outrageous amounts to ship them. Nothing like giving a great free product a bad name.
