EdUbuntu?

Has anyone heard of EdUbuntu yet?

That’s right, EdUbuntu, a new operating system based off it’s “adult” version Ubuntu Linux, is out there and ready for use under the tagline of “Linux for Young People”. This distribution is aimed towards the classroom environment. This operating system claims it will always be free of charge to any users and they hope to one day expand to a University edition suitable for colleges.

Basically that says it all. EdUbuntu is Educational Ubuntu. Do you think this will make a change on how schools operate? If so, how great will the impact be on companies like Mac and Microsoft?

I have been using Ubuntu since last 2 years. I have also used Edubuntu for sometime. It's easy to use, have lots of software for students. Have many educational games as well. I believe if schools take initiative to replace all of their windows based systems with Edubuntu, it will shake the dominance of Windows OS. Many people find linux to be non-user friendly because they have been using Windows from their beginning days. But if they started with Linux based systems, they would never touch Windows based systems.

I do agree with you in that Linux is greater than Windows in most aspects, however the GUI of Windows seems more stable than any other desktop environment of Linux I've ever used. Most of the time the Linux system's seem to use GNOME and for some reason on all my PC's that use Linux the mouse especially lags. But other than that and the widespread compatibility of Windows with pretty much all software, I agree Linux pound for pound has potential to be better for end-users, and is definitely more secure.

So maybe with EdUbuntu, getting the younger generations away from Windows a bit will help, if nothing else, knowledge of Linux. If you ask someone what an operating system is, they may know Windows, but most people who haven't really gone deeper than that (which is a large population of people) don't even know anything else exists.
