heres a idea for you... quite a good one i tihnk... well should i start it now and stop going ...

ok here it is...
You could start a site where people can make a protfolio hosted on your site. Like a blog hosting service but for portfolios. I think that this idea might work. I would try i myself but i do not have the time nor knowledge. If someone did this it would be quite interesting to see where it goes. And if it makes you millions then i should never of written this post and im going to jump of a very large cliff.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

well how about, user register, activation, it creates a subdomain for them. Login , logout. delete their own account. Maybe even the start of a admin panel to edit the data. I can do basic coding such as echo :p nah i can do abit more than that not much though.

i think i could do that apart from i dont have a clue how to make sub-domains. I think the best way is to use cpanle's functions but that means the website would HAVE to have cpanel install on the server to work.

well you could do the rest of it couldnt you?

i think it is pretty easy to use cpanel to create subdomains with a script.

However I would have to look into it more.

Also then we would need a host that offers unlimited subdomains.

i have herd people talking about it and it doesnt sound that bad.* i did think of a work around though. Instead of giving them a real sub-domain give them a folder and use mod_rewrite to make it look like a subdomain. im not sure if you can do that with mod_rewrite though but i have delt with make directorys and deleting them with php before.*<- forget about that

i found this:(nothing to do with cpanel)

How do I create subdomains?

Everyone has a "www" subdomain (In "www.yourdomain.com", the "www" part is the subdomain). The www subdomain is created by, and serves files from, your /htdocs/www directory on the filesystem.

To add more subdomains, just create new subdirectories in the /htdocs directory.

For instance, if you had the domain name mychevycars.com and wanted a subdomain for Corvettes, then you would just create the directory /htdocs/corvettes and upload the files in there that you wanted to see at http://corvettes.mychevycars.com

seems simple but it means the person would only be able to get to the website but using http://someone.myportfolio.com and http://www.someone.myportfolio.com would not work. :td: .

thanks man, if anyone else wants to get involved than feel free.

Would love to join in & help - not a coder, but can get involved with non-techie stuff (promoting, maybe some admin tasks, small bucks??)

Nice idea there - I'm :sold:

hostrocket.com offers unlimited subdomains i believe, and there very simple to do. Also the subdomains work both with and without the www.

for example
http://designs.bumrecords.net
http://www.designs.bumrecords.net

also I could probably find a script for this. But I can't spend any money on a domain, but Im interested in being a partner of this site

yes, i know of tons of host that offer unlimited sub-domains.
also the sub-domain would only work via http://designs.bumrecords.net and not http://www.designs.bumrecords.net unless use the second level sub-domain. ( the "www" is a sub-domain anyway so it will be parrallel any other subdomain.)

{BTW: i will start coding when i get home, at school now}

couldnt you use mod rewrite for that? or something similar. I can problably mod rewrite it aswell i have been looking up about that.

also we could use the namepros points if people dont mind contributing their points. All my points will go towards the domain. Contributions would be grateful, that way we could get a domain quicker and make sure we get it and all.

i have done the registration form (ended up being 220 lines long :'( ) . There is missed-out field detection (marks boxes that where missed out in red), stiky forms and it email the user there password for a safty/activation(user changes password when he/she logs in).

i can donate some points. i can probuly donate you about 200 np. i have 50 domain creadits too so if you donate to me i can buy it and then transfer it back you

my todo list:

when user signs up give them a folder. <- done (i think)
start a user admin pannel
start a admin(website owner) admin pannel.
Make a install script

I had this idea ages ago, too. Although, I might develop it myself. Would only take a few days of coding for me.

well if it would take very little coding for you do you want to join the project? this way you could have help designing the layout and advertising. It would be a cool project to do as a group.

All you would have to do is make a subdomain of www within the subdomain if it doesn't work by default. However if you use cpanel for subdomains i think it usually automatically works.

But really there isn't much of a need for that www thing other than for a saftey net sort of thing.

The Real Host - the host that I have has plans going up to unlimited subdomains, however you have to upgrade your plans - and it is only when you are using 80% of either your space or your bandwidth. http://forums.t-rh.net

My username there is Brian

For the membership system make sure it has e-mail validation - pretty easy to implement. And make sure that the subdomain is only reserved when you create your account, but not actually created. The subdomain is only created once the account is activated, and have it so that if it is not activated for a certain period of time, 72 hours or something that account is deleted and the subdomain is no longer reserved.

Sorry if I made that confusing, let me know if you need clarification.

hats not thaaat confusing. I understand the reserving thing and that is agood idea. Anyway of deleting subdomains?

brianmn, cpanel does a differnt meathod than were using so this way we can get more control over the site. The site email activation have (mail password) has already been done for now but i know what your talking about and i was going to do a system like that when all the mysql setting is set up and more of the site is completed or else were pend all our time on making a really nice registration page and have no site ;) .Puting a www folder in the folder will note make a sub-domain just like that. You would have to set it up though a second level sub-domain.

Immersion, yes the sub-domain will be can be deleted will only a few lines of code
